AT&T said it has expanded its 4G LTE network in metro Atlanta to include areas south and west of the city.

The high-speed wireless service is now available in Walton, Newton and Butts counties, with additional coverage in Douglas and Paulding.

AT&T says network offers faster speeds for mobile gaming, two-way video calling and other services. To access 4G LTE, customers must have a compatible device and data plan.

LTE, which stands for “Long Term Evolution,” is becoming the new standard for mobile performance in delivering data. The networks are designed to provide up to 10 times the speeds of 3G networks for smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

According to research by RootMetrics, AT&T offers the fastest LTE download speed among carriers. Its findings are based on more than 725,000 data sample reviews while visiting the top 77 U.S. markets in the second half of 2012.

In its latest “RootScore Report” on delivering data in metro Atlanta, RootMetrics tested the average time it took carriers to download 10 emails. AT&T came out on top with 2.1 seconds, followed by Verizon at 2.2 seconds; Sprint, 3.2 seconds; and T-Mobile, 5.1 seconds, the report said.
