Evaluating metro Atlanta’s other malls
Georgia has some of the best shopping in the South. With over 70,000 retail locations and sales over $115 billion, there is a retail location and experience tailored to everyone. We asked Mike Matacunas, CEO of The Parker Avery Group, to evaluate other metro Atlanta malls.
Phipps Plaza (1968) (Simon Malls), Buckhead
When you want to browse, shop and spend a day exploring high end retail fashion, Phipps remains your best bet in Atlanta. With more than 100 specialty shops, Phipps is typically less crowded and provides a more relaxed retail experience. One of the oldest malls in Georgia, this is still one of the best.
Perimeter Mall (1971) (General Growth Properties), Perimeter
With nearly 1 million people living in the area, with an average household income close to $100,000, Perimeter Mall serves as an important focal point for social, entertainment and retail needs north of Atlanta. Home to a number of outstanding restaurants, Perimeter is constantly busy.
Cumberland Mall (1973) (General Growth Properties), Marietta
Cumberland underwent extensive renovations through 2007, including a 77,000 square-foot streetscape. In a market with projected 26 percent growth in population from 2000 to 2013, the mall is a combination of aggressive price retailers, such as Costco Wholesale and Macy’s, and a strong restaurant row.
Southlake Mall (1976) (General Growth Properties), Morrow
Located a few miles from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Southlake Mall has more than 120 retail stores. Catering to a younger demographic, the mall is usually bustling on a Saturday afternoon.
Town Center at Cobb (1986) (Simon Malls), Kennesaw
Although Town Center can be difficult to get to at peak traffic times, the mall has invested in extensive enhancements over the last year. The property doesn’t offer the same type of social and entertainment venues. The retailers will need to develop events and be aggressive on prices to drive traffic if it is to remain a staple of Kennesaw commerce.
North Point Mall (1993) (General Growth Properties), Alpharetta
North Point Mall continues to serve north Atlanta with its combination of specialty shops and food court with carousel for the kids. In addition, the mall sits in the middle of a larger retail shopping region. With one of Atlanta’s most affluent demographics and average household income of $118,000, North Point is positioned well to weather current retail challenges.
Mall of Georgia (1999) (Simon Malls), Buford
As one of the largest retail properties in the South with over 225 stores, the Mall of Georgia offers a broad range of shopping. The Mall provides a comfortable shopping experience for young families pushing strollers, the determined shopper or the individual who needs to grab something quick.
The Mall at Stonecrest (2001) (Forest City Enterprises), Lithonia
With over 1.1 million square feet of retail space, the Mall at Stonecrest serves a growing economy east of Atlanta. Recently, to create a more family-friendly shopping experience, Stonecrest implemented a Parental Involvement Program after 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. This may have an impact on retailers who cater to younger shoppers and rely on foot traffic and events to drive sales.
