Delta Air Lines ranked third in an annual ranking of airline quality, according to a new report Monday.

The Airline Quality Rating by researchers at Wichita State University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University put Virgin America in the top position for overall airline quality. Hawaiian Airlines took the No. 2 spot.

Atlanta-based Delta moved up one spot from its No. 4 position last year.

“Delta is an excellent example of a merger that declined in performance and systematically has clawed its way back to a new high level of quality performance,” said researcher Brent Bowen, dean of the College of Aviation at Embry-Riddle’s Prescott, Ariz. campus, in a written statement. “This shows that if an airline commits to improving their AQR rating, they can do it.”
