Delta Air Lines is promoting Gil West to the position of chief operating officer, overseeing the Atlanta-based carrier’s operations divisions starting March 1.

West joined Delta in 2008 as senior vice president of airport customer service. He steps into the COO spot to replace Steve Gorman, who is retiring after holding the position since 2008.

Also this week, West was named to Gov. Nathan Deal’s severe winter weather warning and preparedness task force.
