Delta Air Lines is moving its subsidiary MLT Vacations from the Minneapolis area to Atlanta, bringing the work of about 160 employees to the airline’s headquarters near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
MLT Vacations —which manages Delta Vacations, United Vacations, Aeromexico Vacations and Worry-Free Vacations — will move its headquarters to Atlanta-based Delta’s corporate campus.
One of Delta’s annual goals is to grow profits by 30 percent from MLT Vacations and other businesses including Delta Private Jets, Delta Global Services and Delta TechOps.
MLT Vacations president John Caldwell wrote in a memo to travel agencies that MLT and Delta evaluated how to operate more efficiently and profitably by “leveraging our mutual resources,” and there are “significant synergies” possible by moving the headquarters to Atlanta.
The company plans to offer the roughly 160 employees in Minnesota the opportunity to transfer to Atlanta, then open up remaining positions to others later this year. The headquarters jobs are in areas including marketing, finance, advertising, human resources and distribution.
Though the headquarters will move to Atlanta over the next several months into 2013, hundreds of employees in reservations, information technology and outside sales will remain in Minneapolis; Minot, N.D. and elsewhere.
MLT Vacations started in 1969 as a travel agency called Mainline Travel. Delta acquired the company through its merger with Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest Airlines in 2008.
