Frequent fliers will have to pay an extra 5,000 miles for round-trip award flights to several key regions on Delta Air Lines.

Atlanta-based Delta on Sept. 1 quietly increased the number of miles required for certain award flights from the United States to the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe and parts of South America. The types of mileage rates affected are for economy class seats in the medium and high redemption tiers, which have more choices available for award bookings than the low tier.

Delta increased the number of miles required for the Caribbean and Mexico to 55,000 in the medium tier or 75,000 miles in the high tier; while it hiked the rate for Europe, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay to 95,000 in the medium tier or 130,000 in the high tier.

Meanwhile, it decreased the mileage rate for first class or business class seats in the high tier to Southeast Asia.
