May 6, 2010

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines' passenger traffic fell 2.2 percent in April, as it cut flight capacity by 4.1 percent, the company reported Thursday.

While Delta's domestic passenger traffic was up 0.3 percent, its international traffic fell 6.3 percent. Overall, Delta's planes averaged 83 percent full in the month, up from 81.4 percent a year earlier.

AirTran Airways said its April passenger traffic grew 8.1 percent as it increased flight capacity by 6.1 percent. Its planes averaged 81.9 percent full, up from 80.4 percent a year earlier. AirTran, which is based in Orlando and has its largest hub in Atlanta, said the traffic set a company record for the month of April.

Both airlines measure passenger traffic in revenue passenger miles and capacity in available seat miles.
