A Georgia company is recalling an egg product due to a risk of salmonella poisoning.

American Egg Products of Blackshear is recalling five-pound cartons of a frozen egg product that was distributed to Georgia and Florida and sold to three distributors and food manufacturers.

The product, American Egg Products Frozen Egg Product, comes in five-pound paper cartons. Lot # 272-1 is printed across the side of the master case and is embossed on the end of each carton.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the product, the company said.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling by a private laboratory detected salmonella. The company has halted distribution of the  product. The Food and Drug Administration and the company are working  to identify the source of the contamination.

Consumers who have purchased the product can return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions can contact the company at 912-449-5700 Monday through Friday, between 8  a.m. and 5 p.m.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. Sympsoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
