Wal-Mart announced last week that it would close 269 of its stores in the U.S. and globally, including seven locations in Georgia that are scheduled to be shuttered by Jan. 28.

The retail giant discounted nearly all remaining merchandise at all closing stores by 25 percent on Monday, and by 50 percent Friday, according to Consumerist.com.

"We've seen some strong interest from the public in the stores that are closing trying to take advantage of the discount," said company spokesperson Randy Hargrove.

Wal-Mart said the clearance sale does not apply to firearms, ammunition, fuel, prescriptions, jewelry, lottery tickets, alcohol, wireless plans, smartphones and tablets.
