Caterpillar's new manufacturing plant near Bogart and Athens is one of the biggest economic development projects in the state in recent years. Nearly one year after breaking ground, Caterpillar Inc. has begun moving into the 850,000-square-foot facility.

Todd Henry, operations manager (left), watches Jon Pace and Johnny Luthi install communications cabling in the facility. The current 55 employees, with 32 hired from Georgia, are the first of an expected work force of 1,400.

Henry (left) shows local media a mini hydraulic excavator similar to what will be produced at the plant. The company expects to begin building pilot machines in June, and production models in October. The first small track-type tractors and mini hydraulic excavators are expected to begin shipping in June. The plant will become the global source for Caterpillar's small track-type tractors.
