Atlanta travelers can use app to submit Customs declaration

International travelers flying into Atlanta will soon be able to submit their Customs declaration form via an iPhone or iPad app.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Monday announced it will launch a pilot program Aug. 13 at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, allowing eligible international travelers to use the app to create a profile with their passport information. After landing, they will be able to submit their Customs declaration form through the app, then receive an electronic receipt with a square-shaped scannable QR code that lasts four hours. Travelers then present their passport and mobile device with the code to a Customs officer. The app does not replace a passport.

U.S. citizens and Canadian visitors are eligible to use the app, which will be free to use, does not require pre-approval and will result in shorter wait times, U.S. Customs said.

According to Customs, the passport information is submitted via secure encryption protocols. Travelers must have a Wi-Fi or cellular connection to submit the Customs declaration form and get the QR code on the app. More information on the Mobile Passport Control app is on the U.S. Customs website.
