Metro Atlanta hiring is strong – especially for some kinds of engineers.
At least according to LinkedIn, the social networking site focused on business and employment, the region's job market has put together a couple months of solid growth.
Now, the official data on February's job situation in metro Atlanta – job growth, the unemployment rate – will not be released until March 30. In fact, we don't even get the Labor Department's numbers for January until next Thursday (although we do have the state report for January already).
LinkedIn this week said they think they know what it will say.
Well, they don’t have the exact numbers, you understand, but they think they’ve got the gist of what the report will say: Hiring in February was strong – better than the month before, better than the same month a year ago.
LinkedIn has a strong claim to being a data source: There are 133 million workers in the United States who have profiles on LinkedIn, the company said.
Moreover, more than 3 million jobs are posted on the site every month. Meanwhile, more than 20,000 companies used LinkedIn to recruit, the company said.
The scarcest skills in Atlanta now? Here are the ten areas where there is the largest gap between strong demand and inadequate supply – at least according to LinkedIn:
- Mechanical and aerospace engineering
- Healthcare management
- Construction
- Education and teaching
- "Lean" manufacturing and quality management
- Life sciences
- Digital and online design and publishing
- Mortgage financing
- Non-profit, fundraising and grant-making
- C++, the programming language
And while tech is considered a generally strong sector, it really does seem to depend on the details. Which branch of technology? What level of expertise?
According to LinkedIn, there are some kinds of techies that we’ve got plenty of. The most “abundant” skill in Atlanta is that of a computer network and network administration, followed closely by information tech infrastructure and system management.
After that are sales, accounting and management consulting, LinkedIn says.
