Atlanta's Equitable Building

The Equitable Building in downtown Atlanta will be auctioned.

Atlanta's Equitable Building sits across from Woodruff Park on the site of the old Piedmont Hotel, once one of the city's poshest hotels.

According to Fulton County property tax records, the building has fallen in value.

A historic marker stands in front of the old Winecoff Hotel (now the Ellis Hotel) with the Equitable Building soaring behind it on the left. The Winecoff burned on December 7, 1946, killing 119. It remains the country's worst hotel fire.

After the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, many Atlantans were concerned that the city's tallest buildings, including the Equitable Building at 100 Peachtree Street, could be targets.

The Equitable Building stands as a backdrop to columns from the original Equitable Building of 1892, which was Atlanta's first skyscraper. The Equitable Building is a 35-story, 453 foot office building designed by the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and completed in 1968.

The Equitable Building, seen alongside the Georgia Pacific Building in this 2005 photo, was Atlanta's first skyscraper. It still ranks as the 21st tallest building in Atlanta.

A view of the Equitable Building and the surrounding area, including Woodruff Park, as pictured in 1978. The building was owned by Equitable Life Assurance Society from 1968 to 1997, when it was sold to Chicago-based LaSalle Advisors for almost $36 million. It is now a part of AXA Equitable Life Insurance.

Construction of The Equitable Life Assurance Society building (right) and the Trust Company of Georgia building (now SunTrust) tranformed Atlanta's landscape.

Before the Equitable Building was built, Peachtree Street was paved with bricks. In this early 1900s photo, the Georgia Savings Bank Building and Piedmont Hotel, built in 1903, can be seen. The Piedmont Hotel was replaced by the Equitable Building.
