Retail giant Amazon has launched same-day delivery in metro Atlanta, a move expected to ramp up the already intense competition to get products in the hands of consumers quicker.
Seattle-based Amazon said Tuesday that millions of items — including health and beauty products, toys, movies and games, electronics, office supplies, sporting goods and home accessories — is now available for same-day delivery to metro Atlantans when they place orders as late as 12 p.m., seven days a week.
It will come at a cost: same-day delivery for Amazon customers with a “prime” membership will pay $5.99 per order. Those without the membership will pay $8.99 per order, plus 99 cents per item, according to the company’s website.
Metro Atlanta cities on the list for the service include Atlanta, Alpharetta, Kennesaw, Marietta, and Mableton.
Same-day delivery is the last mile for retailers as they try to win the war for customers with speed. Atlanta-based Home Depot, for instance, has launched a “buy-online, ship to stores” program to give customers an option to pick up available products on their way home from work. And Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos created buzz around the world earlier this year when he suggested using drones to drop packages off at consumers’ homes.
Atlanta joins several other metro areas already getting Amazon’s same-day delivery, including Baltimore, Boston, Dallas and Washington D.C.
