AirTran Airways' former general counsel Richard Magurno has retired, the company noted in a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Magurno, who was AirTran's general counsel through last August, retired March 31 as senior vice president and secretary of Orlando-based AirTran and its parent company AirTran Holdings Inc.

Magurno's retirement had been planned since last year as part of a succession plan. Steven Rossum succeeded Magurno as general counsel, and Rossum now also assumes the title of secretary.

AirTran Airways is preparing to close a deal to be acquired by Dallas-based Southwest Airlines.
