AirTran boosts checked bag fee
AirTran Airways is increasing its first checked bag fee to $20, though that will still be less than archrival Delta Air Lines charges.
The increase from $15 to $20 takes effect Sept. 1 for coach reservations made Aug. 17 or later, according to AirTran's website. The fee will not increase for those flying before Sept. 1.
AirTran spokesman Tad Hutcheson said the airline is raising the fee because its fuel costs have been increasing.
AirTran, which is based in Orlando and has its largest hub in Atlanta, charges $25 for a second checked bag.
The increased first checked bag fee on AirTran comes as other airlines also increase fees.
Atlanta-based Delta charges $25 for a first checked bag on domestic flights, or $23 if the fee is paid online.
For a second checked bag, Delta charges $35, or $32 when paid online.
Sharmyn Kelliehan, who lives in Ellenwood, said she has always checked a bag when she has flown in the past, but would consider shipping her luggage instead of paying a fee to check it.
"I think that along with the cost of your ticket," Kelliehan said, "you should be entitled to have a bag checked free of charge."
