Fox confirmed Tuesday that "American Idol' will be back in 2015 for a 14th season despite alarmingly poor ratings season 13.

Kevin Reilly, president of Fox, recently told Vulture that he isn't sure if 2015 will be the final season - even if it should. He did say he might try to bring back the original three judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.

As I noted yesterday, the odds of bringing back this year's judge's panel is slim, especially Jennifer Lopez, who has committed to an NBC drama in 2015. And she's pricey.

(UPDATE: Well, maybe I"m wrong. TV Guide says they all may come back. I guess we'll see.)

We are all wondering how a final season of "Idol" would look like but I'm sure it will involve bringing back a lot of former  "Idol' contestants and judges and a lot of nostalgia. (But not necessarily bringing back the same old songs.)

Last night's episode drew a dismal 7.8 million viewers and a 1.7 18-49 rating in the early ratings. That would be yet again a series low for a performance show. Now "Survivor," an older show, is destroying "Idol" with 9.8 million viewers and a 2.4 18-49 rating last night.

Last year's comparable top 4 performance show drew 11.26 million viewers and a 2.9 18-49 rating. That's down 31 percent among total viewers and an even sharper 41 percent among 18-49 year olds year over year.

The year of Phillip Phillips? The top 4 performance show drew 16.46 million viewers and a 4.5/ 18-49 rating in 2012.

So over two years, the show has lost more than half its total viewers and a whopping 62 percent loss in 18-49 viewers.
