Wednesday will focus on policy. The numbers will have to wait.

Oftimes, the third day of the January session of the General Assembly has featured both the governor’s State of the State address and the unveiling of his proposed budget.

This year Gov. Nathan Deal decided to separate the two.

Deal will give his State of State at 11 a.m. and is expected to make his case on increased transportation funding and education -- including his proposal to give the state more leeway when it comes to taking over troubled school sys

tems. The governor might also defend his position on medical marijuana, which has not gained him many friends this week.

As for legislative business, the House and Senate will each meet briefly at 10 a.m., before state senators join their colleagues in the House to hear the governor’s speech.

Those eagerly awaiting their copy of the governor's budget will have to wait until Friday. But Deal himself won't speak to it until next week.
