Donald Trump is headed to Georgia next week for a campaign fundraiser hosted by two of the state's top Republicans.
The presumptive GOP nominee will be in town June 15 to raise cash for his general election contest against Hillary Clinton at an event hosted by Gov. Nathan Deal and Sen. David Perdue, the billionaire's campaign said Tuesday.
It's little surprise that Perdue, who unequivocally endorsed Trump last week, is raising money for him. But Deal's involvement is more noteworthy.
The governor voted for Jeb Bush in Georgia's primary and said last month that while he would support the party's nominee, his endorsement matters little. Deal's office said Monday that he is "undecided" about attending the July convention in Cleveland.
Trump won the state's presidential primary with nearly 40 percent of the vote in March and still has staff in Georgia raising money and organizing grass-roots efforts ahead of the general election.
Georgia Democrats contend that they can compete in Georgia in 2016 with Trump at the top of the ticket, pinning their hopes on mobilizing high turnout from minorities and winning over moderate women disillusioned by him.
But the Georgia GOP has closed ranks around the party's standard-bearer, and many of his one-time critics said they are willing to set aside their concerns in hopes of defeating Democrat Hillary Clinton. At last weekend's Georgia GOP convention, activists and establishment leaders formed a hesitant truce over their nominee.
Trump has no public events on his calendar yet, but we're told the event will include many of his earliest supporters in Georgia, including GOP fundraiser Rayna Casey and Dunwoody jeweler Bruce LeVell.
