Des Moines, Iowa - Fresh off his Iowa caucus defeat, Republican Donald Trump's campaign is seeking to shore up support in the South.
The billionaire has high hopes for next week's race in New Hampshire, but Texas Sen. Ted Cruz's victory in deeply conservative Iowa could make him the candidate to beat when the race turns to South Carolina, Georgia and the rest of the region.
His campaign scheduled a "Farmers for Trump" rally on Thursday in
. It also announced on Tuesday new campaign offices in Evans, Valdosta and Brunswick, as well as a dozen meetings across the metro area. An Atlanta office,
, opened a few weeks ago.
Trump has long led the scattered polls in Georgia and his campaign has five paid staffers in Georgia. But Cruz's victory in Iowa could upend the race for the hearts of evangelicals who dominate the Georgia GOP's electorate.
The Trump campaign's flurry of activity is a blaring signal that he's ready for a fight with Cruz over Georgia conservatives.
