Two of the biggest Donald Trump boosters in the race for Georgia's Sixth District are feuding with each other in the battle for the suburban Atlanta district.
Bruce LeVell, who was head of Trump's diversity coalition, said Bob Gray has been "lying to the Trump voters from the start of this campaign" about his support for the president. He included a yard sign purported to be on Gray's Facebook page that he said exposes him as a "false prophet."
"Bob Gray was one of countless snarky nobodies putting out NeverTrump yard signs in 2016," he said, "while I was in the trenches leading the President's army to success in Georgia."
Gray, a former Johns Creek councilman, has promised to be a "willing partner" of Trump and has featured his drain the swamp slogan in his ad campaign. His aide had no comment about the social media post, but said the campaign's focus is on Democrat Jon Ossoff.
"We're focused on defeating the Democrat," said Joash Thomas, a campaign spokesman, "not any of the candidates polling below Lindsey Graham."
Jason Anavitarte, who was a leading Marco Rubio supporter, said in a Twitter post late Thursday that Gray endorsed the Florida senator in Georgia's 2016 primary. He attached another Facebook post from Gray to his message.
Trump won the district, which stretches from east Cobb to north DeKalb, by just one point in November. But the two contend his approval rating in the solidly-conservative area is surprisingly high, and hope to land a spot in a June 20 runoff by defending the president.
The Club for Growth PAC's endorsement of Gray has become another flashpoint. The free-market advocacy group has long had a queasy relationship with Trump and LeVell, who has rejected help from political action committees, called it "Trump's number one enemy."
