Charles “Chunk” Reid, whose 881 victories as a girls basketball coach is the Georgia record, died Tuesday afternoon. He was 75.

Reid coached Vidalia’s girls basketball team from 1970 to 2017. He also coached girls softball for 16 years and won a state title. He was Vidalia’s baseball coach for two seasons.

In girls basketball, Reid won 25 subregion titles and 11 region championships. His 2010 team was a state runner-up. His teams averaged 19 wins and had only eight losing seasons.

“We have lost not only a great coach but we have also lost a great friend,” Vadalia principal John Sharpe said. “I ask that everyone please keep the Reid family in their prayers as well as the Vidalia Indian family during this difficult time.”

Tommy Dalley called Reid an iconic figure in Vidalia.

“He was able to touch so many lives during his time as teacher, coach and athletic director,” Dalley said. “He was such a well-respected coach and friend to so many of his peers from around the state. He has had a tremendous impact on everyone that he has come in contact with, but we know he is at peace now and our prayers are with his family.”

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home in Vidalia.
