South Forsyth’s girls, ranked No. 8 in Class AAAAAA, became the first major victim of region tournaments this week when they were ousted Wednesday by Chattahoochee 48-41. Ranked as high as No. 3 at one point this season, South Forsyth now is done for the season, having failed to make its region semifinals.
Chattahoochee had lost to South Forsyth 66-24 and 60-44 in the regular season. South Forsyth’s Sarah Myers, a four-year starter who has signed with Maryland, did not play because of an ankle injured suffered last week. South Forsyth lost last week to North Forsyth. Myers was injured early in that game.
One of the better boys teams whose season is over is New Manchester, which was 17-4 one week ago but finished on a three-game losing streak, with Hiram putting an end to the Jaguars’ season in the Region 5-AAAAA tournament. Hiram is 11-16 and lost to New Manchester 64-55 and 50-37 in the regular season.
Meanwhile, there are games games Thursday night that match ranked teams in semifinals.
In Region 4-AAAA, No. 1 Jonesboro plays No. 6 Eagle’s Landing (boys), and No. 5 Jonesboro plays No. 7 Griffin (girls).
In 6-AAAA, No. 3 Grady plays No. 5 St. Pius (boys) at Chamblee.
In 6-AA, No. 3 Pace Academy plays No. 7 Greater Atlanta Christian (boys) at Pace.
All those games are semifinals, meaning each team has already qualified for the state playoffs.
And finally, congratulations to Woodstock’s boys team. Wednesday’s 61-47 victory over Etowah put Woodstock in the state playoffs for the first time.
