The athletics page on the Rockdale County website features a line that was posted last year. It reads, “Congratulations to Candace Hill – Class 6A state champion and state record holder in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.”
The rest of the page needs to be updated. That particular line, however, can stay the same as Hill, just a sophomore, eclipsed the state records she set at last season’s Georgia High School Association Track and Field Championships. Saturday at Hugh Mills Track in Albany, Hill won the 100 in a time of 11.34 seconds, .10 faster than last year, and the 200 in 23.05, .16 faster than he old mark. Her 200 time is tops in the nation by a high schooler.
Hill’s record setting performances are completely be design, she said.
“I definitely set goals to break records. Maybe not at some of the smaller meets, but definitely at the sectionals, state championships and other national meets,” Hill said, after the 200. “It keeps me motivated. If I didn’t set those goals, it would just be running.”
While Hill’s performance was the best in a day filled with standout individual performances, it wasn’t enough to garner a Class AAAAAA team title for the Bulldogs. That honor went to Westlake for a third consecutive year.
Unlike the past two seasons, where the Lions had to roar from behind on the final day of the meet by dominating the running events, this time Westlake seized control early during Thursday’s field events and led the meet wire to wire. Key field performers were seniors Mia Phillips and Anriel Howard, who won the long jump and triple jump, respectively, Jada Watson (third in the high jump), Kayla Stinson (fourth in the triple jump) and Ra’breekia Harrison (sixth in the long jump).
“Coming out of the field events with 34 points this season was big,” said co-head coach Jason Cage. “This time, we didn’t have all of the pressure on our runners to win it on Saturday.”
“This year’s team had a lot of balance,” said Robert Wilson, Westlake’s other co-head coach. “We had a lot of ups and downs this season but the kids stuck with it. I’m really happy for this senior group to be a part of all three championships.”
In Class AAAAA, North Springs won the program’s first state title on the strength of strong efforts by junior Micaiah Ransby, who won the 400 and placed second in the 200, and junior Lauren Jackson, who won the 800. The Spartans were able to withstand a valiant effort from Northside-Warner Robins junior Cassondra Hall, who led the Eagles to a second place finish by winning the 100 and 200.
Marist won its third consecutive Class AAAA crown as seniors Morgan Ilse and Caitie Faust dominated. Faust took the 400 and 800 crowns, while Ilse won the 1,600 championship and then the 3,200 title in a record time of 10:25.39, which was nearly a minute faster than the second place finisher.
Jackson-Atlanta won the school’s first state title since it was renamed in honor of former Atlanta mayor Maynard Jackson in 2008. Prior to that, the Jaguars’ only state crown came in 1990 when James Forrest led then-Southside to a state basketball championship. Saturday, Jackson needed to finish third or higher in the meet’s final event, the 1,600-meter relay, to overtake Blessed Trinity for the team championship. The Jaguars’ foursome of Ziya Crawford, Jabrea Smith, Taryn O’Neal and Kayla Jordan left no doubt by winning the event.
“It’s unbelievable. I just praise God,” said Jackson head coach Russell Thomas, who fought back tears just after his team secured the title. “I’m so proud of these girls for buying in to what I’m selling. This is great for our school and for [Atlanta Public Schools].”
Lovett won its second consecutive Class AA championship as senior Khadejah Jackson won the 300-meter hurdles in a state-record time of 43.45, and placed third in the 100-meter hurdles.
Our Lady of Mercy, behind a huge effort by senior Leah Banks, blew away the rest of the Class A-Private field to win the program’s third state championship, while Georgia Military College won the Class A-Public crown.
