Turner County falls

No. 5 Turner County (6-1, 3-1 in Region 2) was knocked out of the list of undefeated teams in Class A by Clinch County, 31-16, in Homerville.  The win by the Panthers has thrown the region championship up for grabs as Turner, Clinch, Charlton and Irwin are now all in the mix for the title.

Trion upset

Did Trion get caught peeking ahead to next week’s showdown with No. 1 Mt. Paran Christian? The Bulldogs (5-2, 1-1 in Region 6-Division A) were defeated by Mt. Zion-Carroll (6-2, 2-1), 30-20, due in large part to giving up two kick returns for touchdowns. But  perhaps the loss was not that unexpected as the Eagles have won three of the last four games against Trion.

Pinecrest breaks through vs. Mt. Pisgah

Pinecrest Academy had not beaten Mt. Pisgah Christian since 2004, until Friday. The Paladins (6-1, 3-0 in Region 6-Division A) rode the 161-yard, four touchdown effort of junior quarterback Ryan McCarthy to a 28-25 win in Cumming. The Patriots (3-4, 2-1) had a chance to tie the game with 25 seconds left in regulation, but missed a 39-yard field goal, according to the Forsyth County News.

Lincoln County dodges a bullet

Next week …

Mt. Paran Christian at Trion.  Trion (5-2, 1-1 in Region 6-Division A) may have gotten caught looking ahead to this battle with one of the top teams in the state, regardless of classification. The Bulldogs were upset Friday by Mt. Zion-Carroll, 30-20, in Carrollton. Trion fell apart on special teams, yielding two returns for touchdowns – a kickoff and a punt return. Another long punt return led to another touchdown. Early in the third quarter, Trion trailed 21-14 despite holding Mt. Zion to less than 50 yards of offense to that point. The Bulldogs will need to rebound quickly. Mt. Paran (7-0, 2-0), located in Kennesaw, has won 21 consecutive game, dating back to last season's undefeated (14-0) state championship season. It is tied for the longest winning streak in Cobb County history (Marietta, 1965-1966) and is third longest currently in Georgia (Colquitt County, 23; Calhoun 22). The Eagles bounced Christian Heritage of Dalton on Friday, 44-21.

Telfair County at Charlton County. Charlton County (5-1, 3-1 in Region 2) has a chance to force a three-way tie atop the region, with Turner County and Clinch County, if it can knock off Telfair (4-3, 2-2). Charlton cannot afford to overlook the Trojans in anticipation of facing Clinch Oct. 30. Charlton has defeated Telfair in six of the last seven meetings.
