Top 10 games of Week 4

Last meeting: Coffee won 38-13 in 2013.

Three things to know: 1. Coffee has two players committed to Florida State – TE Jalen Wilkerson and OL Cole Minshew. QB Tyree Paulk (5-10, 160) was the leading passer in Region 1-AAAAAA in the regular season last season, when he threw for 1,868 yards and 24 touchdowns. He is 21-of-29 for 132 yards and two touchdowns this season. Sophomore RB Demetrius Davis has rushed for 172 yards and scored five touchdowns. 2. Ware County junior RB/LB Dedrick Mills, who has offers from Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech and others, is one of the state's best two-way starters. He has rushed for 175 yards 20 carries and made six tackles. He made preseason all-state as a linebacker. He rushed for 1,329 yards as a sophomore. 3. Both teams have coaches with impressive resumes. Coffee's Robby Pruitt, hired from Fitzgerald in 2012, won seven state titles before age 40 in Florida and is 305-65-1. Ware County's Franklin Stephens, hired from Lamar County this year, is 92-8-1. He won state titles at Tucker in 2008 and 2011.

Commerce at Jefferson

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium, Jefferson

Records, rankings: Commerce is 2-0 and unranked in Class A; Jefferson is 3-0 and No. 4 in AAA.

Last meeting: Jefferson won 40-0 in 2013.

Three things to know: 1. Commerce and Jefferson have played each other each season since 1951, the third-longest streak of its kind in Georgia. Both formerly were Class A schools, but Jefferson has grown substantially in recent years and taken charge of the series, which it trails 42-21-5. Jefferson has won six of the past seven, although Commerce's 22-7 victory over Jefferson's state-championship team was probably the most unlikely result of the 2012 season statewide. 2. Commerce has attempted only one pass (a 13-yard completion) in its two games but is averaging 323 yards rushing. Four backs have more than 100 yards rushing and at least one touchdown – HB Cole Chancey (28-197-2), FB Will Thomas (30-162-1), HB Grant Mayberry (10-136-2) and QB Caleb Brooks (13-10-3). 3. Jefferson's average score in three games is 46-10. The leading rushers are Colby Wood (34 carries, 336 yards, six touchdowns) and Sammy Williams (50-297-5). QB Evan Shirreffs is 37-of-53 passing for 717 yards and five touchdowns. Dalton Hill has 14 catches for 348 yards and two touchdowns. LB Maverick McKinney has a team-leading 24 tackles, four for losses.

East Coweta at Whitewater

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Wildcat Stadium, Fayetteville

Records, rankings: East Coweta is 2-0 and unranked in Class AAAAAA; Whitewater is 2-0 and No. 9 in AAAA.

Last meeting: This is the teams' first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. East Coweta's defense dominated Harrison last week in a 24-7 victory that left the Indians 2-0 for the first time since 2011. East Coweta limited Harrison QB Lorenzo Nunez (committed to South Carolina) to 38 yards rushing on 12 carries and 6-for-16 passing for 92 yards, according to the Newnan Times-Herald. "You can't do a lot in the passing game when the quarterback is laying on the ground and running for his life," Harrison coach Matt Dickmann told the Times-Herald. 2. Whitewater QB Jay Ashley has completed 24 of 39 passes for 327 yards and six touchdowns in two games. He had 120 yards and three TDs in a little more than a half last week in a 31-20 victory against Banneker in a game the Wildcats led 31-6 early in the third quarter. His top targets have been Luke Allen (eight receptions, 115 yards, three touchdowns) and Jonathan O'Brien (7-121-2). Christian Wafford is the leading rusher with 200 yards on 37 carries. 3. First-year East Coweta coach Steve Pardue was 161-45 with three state titles in 17 seasons at LaGrange before leaving in 2011 to become an assistant at Kentucky. He was out of coaching last season. Amos McCreary, who left Creekside to start the Whitewater program in 2004, is 154-69 overall in 21 seasons and 80-31 with the Wildcats.

Flowery Branch at Lanier

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Lanier Longhorns Stadium, Sugar Hill

Records, rankings: Flowery Branch is 1-0 overall, 0-0 in Region 8-AAAAA and No. 9; Lanier is 2-0, 1-0 and unranked.

Last meeting: This is the teams' first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. Flowery Branch freshman Nick Lance got the start at quarterback in the opener after the scheduled starter, sophomore Jasen Johnson, was benched for an undisclosed internal issue. Lance passed for 179 yards and two touchdowns in the 29-0 victory against Chestatee, which was limited to 91 totals yards and five first downs. 2. Lanier RB Ashton Barnes had just two carries for four yards in a season-opening victory against Lambert, but the junior had a breakout game in the region opener last week. Barnes rushed for 224 yards on eight carries and scored on runs of 86 and 97 yards out of the Wildcat formation in a 35-20 win over Clarke Central. Senior Tario Fuller added 110 yards rushing and two TDs against the Gladiators. 3. Lanier is a Gwinnett County school in its third full varsity season. A victory would put the Longhorns in the driver's seat for a playoff berth, if not a run at the region title, in their first season in Class AAAAA after reaching the second round in AAAA last year. They would be 2-0 in the region, with wins against two teams that represented the region in the playoffs each of the past four seasons.

Grayson at Archer

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Archer Community Stadium, Lawrenceville

Records, rankings: Grayson is 2-0 overall, 0-0 in Region 8-AAAAAA and No. 4; Archer is 0-2, 0-0 and unranked.

Last meeting: Archer won 34-21 in 2013.

Three things to know: 1. Grayson, which has long been known for its defense, has achieved a nice balance on offense this season with sophomore QB Chase Brice and junior RB Cameryn Brent. Brice has completed 26 of 36 passes (72.2 percent) for 397 yards and four touchdowns. Brent is the leading rusher in Gwinnett County, according to statistics compiled by the Gwinnett Daily Post, with 356 yards on 52 carries. 2. Archer QB Gabe Tiller was limited to punting duty during the Tigers' 14-10 loss to Peachtree Ridge two weeks ago because of injury. Tiller passed for 230 yards in a season-opening loss to Sandy Creek and threw for 2,370 yards and 28 touchdowns last season. Will Bearden replaced him against Peachtree Ridge and was 8-for-23 passing for 63 yards. 3. This is the region opener for both teams and matches the 2013 region champion (Archer) against the team favored to win it this year (Grayson). The teams have combined to win five of the past six region titles – Grayson won in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012 – with the other going to state champion Brookwood in 2010.

Hillgrove at Lovejoy

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Twelve Oaks Stadium, Hampton

Records, rankings: Hillgrove is 2-1 and unranked in Class AAAAAA; Lovejoy is 2-0 and No. 5 in AAAAAA.

Last meeting: This is the teams' first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. Hillgrove held North Gwinnett to a season-low 256 yards passing in a 28-21 loss last week, but the Hawks were done in by four critical passing plays. North Gwinnett's four touchdowns came on passes of 38 yards on a fourth-and-9 play, 32 yards on fourth-and-20 play, 12 yards with 28 seconds remaining in the first half, and 60 yards one play after North Gwinnett stuffed Hillgrove on a fourth-and-1. 2. Lovejoy WR Preston Williams was the Class AAAAAA offensive player of the year in 2013, catching 56 passes for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns. In two games this year, he has four touchdowns (all of which came in a 41-14 victory against Dutchtown last week) and 226 yards on 10 receptions. 3. Lovejoy has played 10 games in its history against Cobb County schools. Its last regular-season game against a Cobb team was a 21-7 loss to Pebblebrook in 2009. Lovejoy has won six of the 10 games but is 2-4 in the regular season. The Wildcats play Cobb's McEachern next week. Hillgrove, in its ninth season, has never played a Clayton County school.

Marion County at Dooly County

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, The Grove, Vienna

Records, rankings: Marion County is 1-0 overall, 0-0 in Region 4-A and No. 2; Dooly County is 2-0, 0-0 and No. 8.

Last meeting: Marion County won 24-21 in the Class A public-school quarterfinals in 2013.

Three things to know: 1. Dooly and Marion played twice in 2013, with Marion winning 27-25 in the regular season and 24-21 in the public-school semifinals. In the first game, Marion stopped a two-point conversion attempt with 1:07 left. Graduated PK A.J. Wells (Middle Tennessee) made a 47-yard field goal and put all of his kickoffs in the end zone. In the rematch, Wells made a 23-yard field goal with 45 seconds left for the lead. 2. Marion's Johnny Royal, who rushed for 1,421 yards last season, opened with a 108-yard game in a 40-0 victory over Miller County. QB Dustin Eckert was 6-of-7 passing for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Lorenzo Smothers, a preseason all-state pick who lines up in the backfield, out wide and in Marion's secondary, had 118 yards rushing and receiving and scored three touchdowns. 3. Dooly County had seven first-team all-region players last season, and all graduated. But returning is Chanin Hamilton, a running back with reported offers from Cincinnati, Marshall and UAB. Hamilton rushed for 1,444 yards as a sophomore. His numbers were less as a junior as he shared the backfield load.

Peachtree Ridge at McEachern

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Walter H. Cantrell Stadium, Powder Springs

Records, rankings: Peachtree Ridge is 2-0 and No. 7 in Class AAAAAA; McEachern is 0-2 and unranked in AAAAAA.

Last meeting: Peachtree Ridge won 24-21 in 2010.

Three things to know: 1. Peachtree Ridge gets about 57 percent of its offense from the passing game, which is led by Chance Thrasher. The senior QB is 38-for-66 passing (57.6 percent) for 490 yards and five touchdowns, including four in a 41-24 victory against Parkview last week. He is also the team's second-leading rusher with 110 yards on 13 carries, second only to Na'ceem Antenor's 196 yards on 50 carries. 2. McEachern's running game struggled in a 27-20 loss to Buford last week, the Indians' first game since losing RB Taj Griffin (committed to Oregon) to a season-ending knee injury in the opener. The Indians rushed for just 57 yards (2.85 per carry) against Buford, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post. Bailey Hockman passed for 167 yards and two touchdowns. 3. Peachtree Ridge's only game against McEachern was at the Georgia Dome in 2010, but the Lions have played at McEachern's home field. During its run to a share of the 2006 state title, Peachtree Ridge played two neutral-site games at Cantrell Stadium, beating Campbell 16-14 in the second round and tying Roswell 14-14 in the championship game.

Westminster at Elbert County

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Granite Bowl, Elberton

Records, rankings: Westminster is 2-0 and No. 8 in Class AAA; Elbert County is 2-0 and No. 6 in AAA.

Last meeting: Elbert County won 33-14 in 2005.

Three things to know: 1. Elbert junior QB Mecole Hardman, a preseason all-state pick, rushed for 1,672 yards as a sophomore, and he ran for 204 and three touchdowns in a 35-33 victory over Stephens County last week. He is a consensus top-20 recruit in Georgia for the class of 2016. OL Ken Allen is a consensus three-star recruit who has offers from Georgia Tech and Georgia State. 2. Westminster sophomore RB Isaiah "Zay" Malcome rushed for 130 yards against Lovett (13-10 victory) and 94 yards against Laney (14-6 win). The Wildcats have 231 yards in total offense otherwise and are 12-for-27 passing. LB Charlie Trense has 25 tackles in two games. PK Trey Blasingame is 7-for-7 in touchbacks, and P Blake Gillikin has put four of 10 punts inside the 20, including a 71-yarder to the 1 against Laney. 3. Under coach Gerry Romberg, Westminster has a history of scheduling games far from home at places with some tradition – Thomasville, Thomson, Carrollton, Cartersville, Laney and Washington County. Elbert also has sought out metro teams in its brief time under Sid Fritts, who scheduled home-and-home games with Wesleyan and Buford over the past four years.

Woodward Academy at Lovett

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Martin E. Kilpatrick Stadium, Atlanta

Records, rankings: Woodward Academy is 2-0 and No. 5 in Class AAAA; Lovett is 1-2 and No. 6 in AA.

Last meeting: Lovett won 21-14 in 2013.

Three things to know: 1. Woodward has two four-star recruits, and both are living up to their billing. RB Elijah Holyfield has rushed for 301 yards and eight touchdowns on 29 carries in two games. FS Arrington Farrar, who has committed to Stanford, has 14 solo tackles, two for losses. MLB Max Richardson had 11 tackles in a victory over St. Pius last week. 2. Lovett is finding that all-state RB/DB Grant Haley (now at Penn State) is irreplaceable, but his role is being played by senior Murphy Lee, who has rushed for 141 yards on just 13 carries, caught three passes, returned kickoffs and made 10 tackles as a strong safety. 3. Lovett has won four straight in the series. Lovett won the 2013 game on a 10-yard pass from Willie Candler to Jack McGranahan with 2:02 left. Holyfield rushed for 176 yards in his Woodward debut (he was a transfer from Riverside Military). Lovett's Jay Harris, who is back this year, rushed for 148 yards.
