When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Raider Stadium/The Boneyard, Dallas
Records, rankings: Alexander is 6-1 overall, 5-1 in Region 5-AAAAA and unranked; East Paulding is 6-1, 5-1 and unranked.
Last meeting: Alexander won 32-29 in 2014.
Three things to know: 1. Alexander, East Paulding and Allatoona have one loss each at the top of 5-AAAAA. East Paulding beat Allatoona and would be the region champion if it wins its remaining games. Alexander lost to Allatoona and would need to win its remaining games and hope for an Allatoona loss in order to win its first title since 1996. 2. Alexander has a balanced offense that features a 1,000-yard passer (Baylor Whitfield, 97-for-164, 1,603 yards), a 1,000-yard rusher (Daetrich Harrington, 146 carries, 1,129 yards) and a 900-yard receiver (Justin Hall, 52 catches, 908 yards). The Cougars have passed for at least 200 yards in six of seven games and have rushed for at least 200 yards four times. 3. East Paulding is more of a running team, and the majority of the workload is spread among Cody Long, Dylan Prater and Maurice Sanders, who all average at least 11 carries and 57 yards per game. Prater, the quarterback, attempts about 15 passes per game, most of which go to WR Jalen Browder. LB Sonny Smith leads the defense with 13 tackles per game.
Hughes at Westlake
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Westlake Stadium, College Park
Records, rankings: Hughes is 4-3 overall, 4-0 in Region 3-AAAAAA and unranked; Westlake is 5-2, 3-1 and unranked.
Last meeting: Westlake won 14-6 in 2014.
Three things to know: 1. Hughes lost its first three games, but a four-game winning streak that included a 29-21 victory over then-undefeated East Coweta has put the Panthers in the lead in a region that has three teams with one loss in region play. Newnan (5-2, 3-1) and East Coweta (6-1, 3-1) are the others. Westlake is the defending champion. 2. Westlake QB Malik Willis began the season at receiver (he had 139 yards receiving in a win over Pebblebrook on Sept. 25) but moved behind center in a critical 41-21 region victory over Newnan on Oct. 9 and responded with 108 yards passing and 136 rushing. Westlake has held five of seven opponents to a touchdown or less. Watch for DE Jordan Mattox (18 tackles for losses), DB Ronnie Blackmon (four interceptions, committed to Colorado) and LB Jarrod Jones (team-leading 39 solo tackles). 3. Hughes QB Isaiah Green, a pocket passer, is 115-of-197 passing for 1,694 yards and 13 touchdowns. He threw for 407 yards in a 56-21 loss to second-ranked Grayson last month. Hughes gets more than three-quarters of its offense passing. Two of Hughes' four leading tacklers are freshman linebackers Charles Thomas and Dequavious Parker. Inside LB Jeffrey Allison, who has several mid-major offers, is the heart of the defense.
Landmark Christian at ELCA
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Commitment Field, McDonough
Records, rankings: Landmark Christian is 5-2 overall, 1-0 in Region 5-A and No. 10; Eagle's Landing Christian is 4-3, 1-0 and No. 3.
Last meeting: Eagle's Landing Christian won 35-28 in 2014.
Three things to know: 1. Landmark Christian, Eagle's Landing Christian and Our Lady of Mercy (4-4, 2-0) are all unbeaten in five-team Region 5-A, and any one of the three could win the region title by winning its remaining games. Our Lady of Mercy is off this week and then plays at ELCA and at Landmark Christian. ELCA has won the past five 5-A titles. 2. Landmark QB Stockton McGuire is 88-for-135 passing for 1,211 yards and 11 touchdowns and has rushed for 350 yards and 10 TDs on 67 carries. Lofton Tidwell has rushed for 1,014 yards, caught 14 passes for 278 yards and returned two kickoffs for touchdowns. LB Brandon Stone (48 tackles) and DB Peyton Hayes (46) are the leading tacklers. 3. ELCA rushes for 258 yards per game, led by junior Trevor Gear (567 yards) and sophomore Josh Mayes (520). Senior QB Donald "DJ" Hammond III, who committed to Air Force last week, has rushed for 277 yards and passed for 405 yards and three touchdowns. LB Chase Burdette (65 tackles) and DB Khaleb Hood (49 tackles, two interceptions) lead the defense.
Mary Persons at Veterans
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Herb St. John Stadium, Perry
Records, rankings: Mary Persons is 7-0 overall, 3-0 in Region 2-AAAA and No. 4; Veterans is 4-3, 3-0 and unranked.
Last meeting: Mary Persons won 31-0 in 2014.
Three things to know: 1. These are the lone unbeaten teams in region play. The only other region-title contender is West Laurens (6-2, 3-1). Veterans beat West on Oct. 9, and Veterans plays West on Nov. 6. Mary Persons has won 15 region titles in its history, but none since 1997. Veterans won its only region title in 2013. 2. Mary Persons is a run-first team with Zach Harvey (121-688-8) and Jaquavious Sims (134-558-8) as the main ball carriers. Sims also is the leading receiver. Pocket-passing QB Jake Johnston is 78-of-134 for 878 yards and nine touchdowns. Junior DE Malik Herring (offers from Florida State, Georgia, Alabama among others) has eight tackles for losses. 3. Veterans RB Desjuan Harris is the third-leading rusher in Class AAAA with 1,051 yards. QB Logan Byrd (committed to North Carolina) has rushed for 621 yards and nine touchdowns. Byrd has a strong arm but has thrown for only 451 yards in the run-centered offense. Veterans' defense, led by LB Josh Lee (73 tackles, six for losses, interception), is allowing 7.0 points per game in region play after being torched at a 42.5 clip against four non-region offenses that included Houston County and Valdosta.
Mays at Carver (Atlanta)
When, where: 4 p.m. Saturday, Lakewood Stadium, Atlanta
Records, rankings: Mays is 7-0 overall, 2-0 in Region 6-AAAAA Div. B and No. 2; Carver is 5-2, 1-1 and unranked.
Last meeting: Mays won 35-14 in 2014.
Three things to know: 1. Mays can clinch the subregion title and a spot in the 6-AAAAA championship game with a victory this week. A win by Carver likely would produce a three-way tie with Mays and Creekside for the top spot, which was the case last year. Creekside won the subregion title on tiebreakers and went on to beat Stephenson for the region championship. Creekside beat Carver 38-22 and lost to Mays 41-21 this season. 2. Mays gets about 70 percent of its offense from a passing game led by QB B.J. Phillips. He is 102-of-151 for 1,662 yards and 24 touchdowns and is the team's leading rusher with 185 yards on 57 carries. Phillips' top targets are Georgia-committed WR Randrecous Davis (36 receptions, 659 yards, 12 TDs) and Corey Reed Jr. (24-404-4). 3. Carver relies more on the run, averaging 333 yards per game rushing and 134.4 passing. Gregory Payton is the leading rusher with 812 yards and seven touchdowns on 68 carries, but Quentin Gates, Timsonte Dukes and Kentrell Barber all average at least 50 yards per game and 12.4 yards per carry.
Newton at Lovejoy
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Twelve Oaks Stadium, Hampton
Records, rankings: Newton is 6-1 overall, 2-0 in Region 2-AAAAAA and unranked; Lovejoy is 3-4, 2-0 and unranked.
Last meeting: Lovejoy won 41-15 in 2014.
Three things to know: 1. Newton is chasing its first region title since 1987. With a victory, the Rams would need to beat only Rockdale County or Lakeside (both 0-2 in region play) to clinch the championship. Lovejoy still must face formidable Tucker next week and has its back against the wall in trying to avoid its first losing season since 2009. 2. Newton QB Romario Johnson is a dual threat. He has passed for 1,433 yards and rushed for 369 and scored six touchdowns. Junior RB Kurt Taylor (committed to Michigan) has rushed for 729 yards and 10 touchdowns. Newton has three Division I-committed defensive players - LB Jaquan Henderson (UCLA), DB Tay Gowan (Miami, Ohio) and DB Jacobi Francis (Memphis), although LB Jeremiah Bundrage, a junior with no reported offers, is the leading tackler. 3. Lovejoy is rebuilding after a five-year run in which the Wildcats were 54-10 with two state finals appearances. The cupboard isn't bare, though, as DE Chris Henderson is committed to Indiana and junior DB Meshael Custis has offers from Clemson, Tennessee and others. Sophomore RB Zion Custis scored three touchdowns last week in a victory over Lakeside.
Peachtree Ridge at Norcross
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Norcross Stadium, Norcross
Records, rankings: Peachtree Ridge is 5-2 overall, 4-0 in Region 7-AAAAAA and No. 9; Norcross is 7-0, 4-0 and No. 8.
Last meeting: Peachtree Ridge won 35-2 in 2014.
Three things to know: 1. These are two of the four teams that are 4-0 in region play. The other two - Mill Creek (7-0, 4-0) and Collins Hill (4-3, 4-0) - also play each other Friday. 2. It will be hard to find a better exhibition of Division I talent in the secondary on one football field this week. Norcross has DB Jarrett Cole (Georgia Tech) and DB Kendrec Grady (Iowa State). Peachtree Ridge has Baylen Buchanan (Louisville), Chad Clay (Georgia), Nigel Warrior (consensus No. 4 safety recruit in U.S.) and sometimes Deangelo Gibbs (consensus No. 1 junior prospect in Georgia). 3. Norcross's offensive players to watch are QB Baron Radfliffe (481 yards rushing, 419 passing) and RB Nicholas Sermons (69-309-4). Jacobe Burrell averages 32.1 yards on kickoff returns, 13.4 on punts. Peachtree Ridge's offensive leaders are sophomore QB Fred Payton (45-of-71 passing, 610 yards, eight TDs), RB Marquez Jackson (433 yards rushing) and WR Christian Sutton (304 receiving on 21 catches).
Sandy Creek at Woodward Academy
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Colquitt Stadium, College Park
Records, rankings: Sandy Creek is 6-1 overall, 2-0 in Region 5-AAAA and No. 8; Woodward Academy is 7-0, 2-0 and No. 3.
Last meeting: Woodward Academy won 28-7 in 2014.
Three things to know: 1. Sandy Creek and Woodward Academy will be favored in their remaining games, so the winner is likely to win the region championship, although both teams still must contend with Carrollton, which is just 4-3 overall but 2-0 in the region. Woodward is the defending champion, but Sandy Creek has won eight titles since 2003. 2. Sandy Creek averages 210.1 yards per game rushing and 155.7 passing. Jaelen Greene is the leading rusher with 57 carries for 498 yards, but Marvin Hubbard (44-421) and Drezyn Parson (47-285) get their share of the carries. QB Bryant Walker is 54-of-88 passing for 973 yards and 10 touchdowns. Korey Banks Jr. (29 catches, 563 yards) is the only receiver with more than nine catches. 3. Woodward Academy has been more reliant on this pass than it would have been this season because RB Elijah Holyfield (committed to Georgia) has missed all but two games because of injuries. He is still the team's leading rusher with 313 yards. QB Ryan Glover is 74-for-118 passing for 1,138 yards and 10 touchdowns and has rushed for 174 yards on 48 carries. The War Eagles average 162.6 yards passing and 144.3 rushing.
Stockbridge at Woodland (Stockbridge)
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Wolfpack Stadium, Stockbridge
Records, rankings: Stockbridge is 7-0 overall, 3-0 in Region 4-AAAAA Div. B and No. 3; Woodland is 6-1, 3-0 and unranked.
Last meeting: Stockbridge won 36-7 in 2014.
Three things to know: 1. Stockbridge and Woodland are tied for first place in 4-AAAAA Div. B, two games ahead of the field, and the winner will clinch the subregion title and a spot in the region championship game against Northgate, Starr's Mill or Drew. Stockbridge is the defending region champion. Woodland is seeking the first title in the history of the program, which began in 2007. 2. Stockbridge averages 238.3 yards per game rushing and 108.7 passing. Jalen Holston gets about 42 percent of the carries (80 of 191) and has 607 yards. QB Malachi Brown has rushed for 273 yards on 40 carries and has passed for 672 yards. AJC Super 11 DE Charles Wiley (committed to Ole Miss) has 12 sacks. 3. Woodland, in its second season under former Redan and Decatur coach Steve Davenport, is trying to reach 7-1 for the first time. The Wolfpack is led by RB DeAngelo Albert, who ran for 164 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-0 win over Union Grove last week, the school's first shutout since 2009. Albert has 1,034 yards and 13 TDs rushing for the season.
West Forsyth at Lambert
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Longhorn Stadium, Suwanee
Records, rankings: West Forsyth is 5-2 overall, 5-1 in Region 6-AAAAAA and unranked; Lambert is 6-1, 6-0 and unranked.
Last meeting: Lambert won 33-27 in 2014.
Three things to know: 1. West Forsyth opened the season 0-2, including a region loss to Alpharetta, but a five-game winning streak - including a 38-34 win over previously unbeaten South Forsyth last week - has put the Wolverines in contention. Lambert is seeking its first region title since the school opened in 2009. 2. West Forsyth junior QB Kiernen Hamilton threw five TD passes in the South Forsyth victory last week. He is 90-of-175 passing for 1,813 yards and 25 touchdowns. Sophomore WR Zachary Burns (36-493-5) is the possession receiver, and senior WR Austin Reid is the home-run threat (20-537-9). But it was sophomore Ben Bresnahan who had the big game against South Forsyth with six catches for 95 yards and three touchdowns. 3. Lambert sports a highly balanced offense - 173.6 yards passing per game, 172.9 rushing. Junior QB Richie Kenney, who has some mid-major offers, is 79-of-131 passing for 1,148 yards and seven touchdowns. The leading rusher is Harrison Pomfret (119-426-5). Leading tacklers MLB Mac Redmond and DE/LB Taylor Brinkerhoff, both juniors, have a combined 18 tackles for losses.
