Clinch County at Charlton County
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Indian Field, Folkston
Records, rankings: Clinch County is 5-3 overall, 4-1 in Region 2-A and No. 10; Charlton County is 7-1, 4-1 and No. 8.
Last meeting: Clinch County won 34-7 in 2013.
Three things to know: 1. Both teams trail Irwin County (6-1-1, 5-0) in Region 2, but Charlton is second in the Class A public-school power rankings, and Clinch is No. 12. Clinch has not won a game at Charlton since 1993. 2. Clinch County has scored 46, 42 and 59 points in the past three games and accumulated 621, 406, and 640 total yards, almost all on the ground behind RB Shannon Young (830 yards on the season) and QB Octavis Johnson (890), a South Carolina commitment. DE Chauncey Manac (seven sacks) is committed to Georgia. LB Marcus Hodges (5-8, 190) leads in tackles (69). 3. Charlton County RB Andrew Lee has 1,050 of his team's 1,439 rushing yards and has 15 touchdowns. QB Jimmy Nettles is 73-of-150 passing for seven touchdowns, but has thrown nine interceptions. Curtis Nixon has 32 catches for 460 yards, and he averages 27.8 yards on kickoff returns and 18.4 on punt returns (two touchdowns). On defense, Tevis Dasher has five interceptions and four fumble recoveries.
Dacula at Archer
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Archer Community Stadium, Lawrenceville
Records, rankings: Dacula is 8-0 overall, 6-0 in Region 8-AAAAAA and No. 2; Archer is 5-3, 5-1 and unranked.
Last meeting: Archer won 31-14 in 2013.
Three things to know: 1. Dacula moved into sole possession of first place in 8-AAAAAA with a 27-17 victory against previously No. 2-ranked Grayson last week. A win against Archer would give the Falcons their first region title since 2005. Archer could force a three-way tie for first by beating Grayson, but the Tigers could win the title outright with victories in their final two games and a Grayson loss to Brookwood. 2. Dacula QB Giovanni Lugo, who had not played since suffering an injury against Mill Creek on Sept. 5, returned to the lineup last week and had a big impact in the victory against Grayson. Lugo led the Falcons with 56 yards rushing, was 5-for-8 passing for 35 yards, ran for a touchdown, passed for a TD and kicked three extra points, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post. LB Lawson Cook recovered a fumble and returned an interception for a score in the fourth quarter. 3. Archer has won five consecutive games, outscoring its opponents 195-38, since opening the season with consecutive losses to Sandy Creek, Peachtree Ridge and Grayson. QB Gabe Tiller, the fifth-leading passer in Gwinnett County with 1,281 yards going into last week's games, threw TD passes of 36, 15, 19 and 15 yards in the Tigers' 35-14 victory against Central Gwinnett.
Greater Atlanta Christian at Lovett
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Martin E. Kilpatrick Stadium, Atlanta
Records, rankings: Greater Atlanta Christian is 8-0 overall, 5-0 in Region 6-AA and No. 1; Lovett is 7-2, 6-0 and No. 3.
Last meeting: Lovett won 17-14 in 2013.
Three things to know: 1. Greater Atlanta Christian and Lovett are the only remaining unbeaten teams in 6-AA play, and the winner will clinch the region championship. GAC hasn't won a region title since 2001. Lovett beat the Spartans last season in similar circumstances and went on to win the Class AA title. Lovett has won six consecutive games in the series. 2. Lovett, which gets about 60 percent of its offense from the running game, is led by QB Willie Candler. The senior leads the team in carries (122) and touchdowns (10) and is second in yards (496). He is 82-for-135 passing for 1,151 yards and 16 TDs. Leading rusher Jay Harris has 554 yards on 89 carries. Candler and Harris each had 76 yards rushing in a 30-24 victory against Wesleyan last week. 3. GAC has three seniors rated as three-star recruits by Rivals. LB Tyler Cooksey has committed to Georgia Tech, DB/RB Micah Abernathy has committed to Tennessee, and WR/DB Darius Slayton reportedly has Georgia, Auburn and South Carolina as his leaders among about 20 offers. Slayton scored touchdowns on a 47-yard reception and a 75-yard interception return in a 38-0 victory against Holy Innocents' last week.
Lowndes at Valdosta
When, where: 8 p.m. Friday, Cleveland Field at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium, Valdosta
Records, rankings: Lowndes is 6-2 overall, 1-2 in Region 1-AAAAAA and unranked; Valdosta is 7-1, 2-1 and No. 5.
Last meeting: Lowndes won 3-0 in 2013.
Three things to know: 1. Either team could finish as high as second in the region, or miss the playoffs entirely, but the prospects are more encouraging for Valdosta. Victories against Lowndes and Lee County would make Valdosta the No. 2 seed (assuming the Colquitt County is the No. 1, as expected). Lowndes, even if it beats Valdosta, might be in a position of needing to beat Tift County next week to make the playoffs. 2. Lowndes averages 209.8 yards rushing, 101.9 passing. The leading rusher is RB Dezmon Copeland with 746 yards. Florida State-committed LB Brian Bell is Lowndes' leading tackler (52 stops). DL Corveon White has 13 sacks. Lowndes has allowed 40 points or more to Colquitt County and Lee County this month after not giving up 40 in a game since 2002. 3. Valdosta ranks eighth in points allowed in AAAAAA, giving up 11.5 per game. Joshua Norwood is one of the state's best cornerbacks. He has offers from Ohio State and Wisconsin. Valdosta is mundane on offense. The leading rusher is Tim McLain (280 yards). Seth Shuman (42-of-83, 612 yards) and Cole Massingill (64-100, 600) share the QB role.
Mill Creek at Norcross
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Norcross Stadium, Norcross
Records, rankings: Mill Creek is 5-3 overall, 4-1 in Region 7-AAAAAA and unranked; Norcross is 6-2, 4-1 and unranked.
Last meeting: Norcross won 27-13 in 2013.
Three things to know: 1. Mill Creek and Norcross are two of the four teams (North Gwinnett and Peachtree Ridge are the others) that are tied for first in 7-AAAAAA. Norcross can win its third consecutive region title outright if it wins its final two games and Peachtree Ridge loses to Collins Hill or Mill Creek. Mill Creek can win the region outright if it wins out, but only if North Gwinnett loses to Meadowcreek (1-7) or Mountain View (2-6). 2. Mill Creek has outscored its opponents 169-21 in three games since starting the season 2-3 against a schedule that included non-region games against No. 1 Colquitt County, No. 2 Dacula and playoff contender West Forsyth. The Hawks' leader on offense is QB Daniel David, who has rushed for 528 yards and is approaching 1,000 yards passing in a run-first offense. 3. Norcross averaged 328.9 yards of total offense through its first seven games but was held to 161, including 36 yards rushing on 26 carries, in its 35-2 loss to Peachtree Ridge last week. It was the second-lowest yardage total of the season for Norcross, which had just 101 yards in a 26-0 loss to Milton on Sept. 5. QB Jacob Gassert was 10-of-21 passing for 125 yards against the Lions.
Southwest DeKalb at Stephenson
When, where: 8 p.m. Friday, James R. Hallford Stadium, Clarkston
Records, rankings: Southwest DeKalb is 6-2 overall, 4-0 in Region 6-AAAAA Div. A and unranked; Stephenson is 6-2, 4-0 and No. 8.
Last meeting: Stephenson won 35-7 in 2013.
Three things to know: 1. The winner is the subregion champion and will play for the region title next week, probably against Creekside. The loser will be the No. 2 seed from the subregion and play the No. 3 seed from the other side, probably Carver of Atlanta, with a state playoff berth on the line. 2. Stephenson runs the ball 75 percent of the time, on par with its tradition. The leading rusher is Ivonte Patterson with 638 yards and 14 touchdowns. But Stephenson has two blue-chip receivers - Dexter Neal (15 catches, 221 yards, six touchdowns, committed to South Carolina) and Isaiah Zuber (10-147-2, committed to Kansas State). QB Dewann Ford is 50-of-89 passing for 718 yards and 10 touchdowns. Stephenson has not thrown an interception. 3. Southwest DeKalb has bounced back from a 2-8 finish in Michael Tanks' first season as coach to put itself in playoff contention. Players to watch are RB Travis Bacon (717 yards rushing), QB Justin Tomlin (59-of-121, 809 yards) and WR Jacoby Riley (23 catches, 356 yards).
Sprayberry at Kell
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, C.J. Kell Stadium, Marietta
Records, rankings: Sprayberry is 6-2 overall, 5-0 in Region 7-AAAAA Div. B and unranked; Kell is 8-0, 5-0 and No. 3.
Last meeting: Kell won 55-7 in 2013.
Three things to know: 1. Sprayberry and Kell are the two undefeated teams in Region 7-AAAAA Div. B, and the winner will earn a spot in the region championship game against Dalton on Nov. 7 and be guaranteed a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the state playoffs. The loser will finish in second place in the subregion and face Sequoyah (the third-place team from Division A) next week for a state playoff berth. 2. Sprayberry opened the season with five-point losses to South Paulding and Kennesaw Mountain but has since won six straight, including five in which the Yellow Jackets gave up seven points or less. For the season, Sprayberry ranks No. 6 in Class AAAAA in average points allowed at 12.9. Offensively, the Yellow Jackets are led by RB Rakeem Myricks, who has rushed for 1,005 yards and seems to get stronger in the second half of games. 3. Kell, which has won 25 consecutive regular-season games, has a balanced offense that averages 420.5 yards per game (221.0 rushing, 199.5 passing). QB Cameron Rosendahl (115-for-161, 1,529 yards, 11 touchdowns) and WR Bryson Armstrong (34 catches, 546 yards, two TDs) form a potent passing combination. The rushers are led by Itabari Mason (110 carries, 699 yards, eight touchdowns) and Ivan Walls (73, 592, seven).
Thomasville at Brooks County
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Veterans Stadium, Quitman
Records, rankings: Thomasville is 5-3 overall, 4-0 in Region 1-AA and No. 5; Brooks County is 6-3, 4-1 and unranked.
Last meeting: Brooks County won 30-23 in 2013.
Three things to know: 1. Thomasville would clinch its first region title since 2007 with a victory. Thomasville has lost three straight in the series. A Brooks County victory potentially would lead to a three-way tie for first among Brooks, Thomasville and Fitzgerald. 2. Thomasville gets 92 percent of its offense from QB Kenneth Hayes (531 yards rushing, 817 passing) and Jalandin Jones (912 rushing). Thomasville's standouts on defense are DB Jay Bowdy (team-best 46 solo tackles, four fumble recoveries, two interceptions, 12 Division I offers), DL Steven Thornton (nine tackles for losses) and LB Gavin Heirs (12 tackles for losses). 3. Brooks County has been outrushed by its opponents (196.3 to 220.0), which is unusual for a good team, but has been extraordinary against the pass. Opponents are 43-of-113 for 439 yards (48.8 per game) with no touchdowns and eight interceptions. On offense, QB Jomantay Jones is 71-of-123 passing for 1,305 yards and 17 touchdowns. RB Ahmad Brown has rushed for 958 yards. WR Exavius Medlock has 31 catches for 664 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Tucker at Lovejoy
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Twelve Oaks Stadium, Hampton
Records, rankings: Tucker is 6-2 overall, 3-0 in Region 2-AAAAAA and No. 10; Lovejoy is 6-2, 3-0 and unranked.
Last meeting: Tucker won 22-7 in the 2011 Class AAAA championship game.
Three things to know: 1. Led by Delvin Weems (737 yards, 13 touchdowns), Tucker runs about 80 percent of the time and averages 9.1 yards per rush. QB Garrett Rigby has attempted only 55 passes, but 10 have gone for touchdowns. LB Maurice Williams leads the team in solo tackles (26), sacks (eight) and tackles for losses (eight). Also watch for DB Duke Shelley (Kansas State commit), LB Elijah Sullivan (Auburn) and DE Jonathan Ledbetter (Georgia). 2. Lovejoy is the more balanced team offensively, averaging 154.5 yards passing and 181.1 rushing per game. QB Quinatarius Neely is 82-of-150 for 1,121 yards and 12 touchdowns. Tennessee-bound WR Preston Williams has 33 catches for 678 yards and 10 touchdowns. The leading rushers are Rico Tilley (5-2 yards) and Kevin Morris-Strong (414). DB Montrell Custis has committed to Alabama. 3. The winner will be the region champion. Lovejoy has won four consecutive region titles, including 2-AAAAAA the past two seasons. Tucker won 6-AAAAA last season. Tucker has won 15 region titles in its history, including eight since 2001. This would be the Tigers' first in the highest classification.
Westside (Macon) at Peach County
When, where: 8 p.m. Friday, Anderson Stadium, Fort Valley
Records, rankings: Westside is 8-0 overall, 6-0 in Region 2-AAA and No. 6; Peach County is 9-0, 7-0 and No. 5.
Last meeting: Peach County won 27-7 in 2011.
Three things to know: 1. Westside and Peach County have clinched the top two spots in 2-AAA, and the winner will be the region champion while the loser finishes second. Westside is going for its first undefeated regular season since 2008, which was Robert Davis' final season as coach. A victory would give Peach County its third 10-0 regular season in Chad Campbell's eight years as coach. 2. Cedric Hollingshed, Westside's leading rusher with 602 yards and four touchdowns on 107 carries, has been limited by an ankle injury in recent weeks and was rested during a 44-20 victory against Spencer last week. In his absence, Donta Pate rushed for a season-high 134 yards on 14 carries and QB Marcell Williams had his fourth consecutive 200-yard passing game. 3. Peach County is allowing 6.3 points per game, the second-best average in Class AAA. The Trojans are led by two Division I recruits. DE Marquies Price (6-6, 225) has committed to Duke. Junior DB Tyrique McGhee reportedly has an offer from Georgia and interest from at least nine other SEC schools.
