Alexander at Northgate
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Henry Seldon Field, Newnan
Records, rankings: Alexander is 4-0 overall, 2-0 in Region 5-AAAAAA and No. 10; Northgate is 5-0, 3-0 and No. 5.
Last meeting: Northgate won 45-13 in 2011.
Three things to know: 1. Five teams in 5-AAAAAA were undefeated when region play began on Sept. 9; Northgate and Alexander are the only ones that remain. Mays is 3-1 overall but undefeated in region games. Northgate would retain sole possession of first place with a victory. Alexander likely would be tied with Mays for first place if it beats Northgate. 2. Alexander RB Daetrich Harrington averages 144.3 yards rushing for a team that is relatively balanced offensively (201.5 yards rushing, 170.3 passing). QB Mason Wood is 43-for-72 passing for 625 yards and eight TDs. DE Tray Jureidini-Wyche leads the Cougars in total tackles (37) and sacks (seven). 3. Northgate RB Ton Evans, a preseason all-state selection, missed two games early in the season with an ankle injury, and the Vikings' backfield has been devastating since his return two weeks ago. Evans, Kyle Cater and Turner Hughes have scored all 14 of the team's touchdowns the past two games. Northgate averaged 19.3 points the first three games and 48 points once it was back at full strength.
Brooks County at Crisp County
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Cougar Den, Cordele
Records, rankings: Brooks County is 4-0 and No. 3 in Class AA; Crisp County is 5-0 and No. 8 in AAA.
Last meeting: This is the teams' first meeting.
Three things to know: 1. Crisp County is 5-0 for the first time since 1997, when second-year head coach Shelton Felton was a linebacker there. Felton later played at Troy. He had been Colquitt County's line coach when hired to his alma mater in 2014. Crisp has lost 15 consecutive games against ranked opponents dating to 2008 (Monroe). 2. Crisp County DE Markaviest "Big Cat" Bryant, rated the No. 13 weakside defensive-end prospect nationally, has nine tackles for losses, two sacks and an interception. Crisp County's offensive playmakers are young. Sophomore QB Patrick Felton, a two-year starter, has thrown for 311 yards and rushed for 247 with a hand in eight touchdowns. Sophomore RB Jammie Robinson had rushed for 269 yards and four touchdowns. 3. Brooks County averages 164.8 yards rushing and 161.3 passing per game with seven touchdowns each. QB Mac Perry suffered an ACL injury in the Pierce County game on Sept. 16 and likely is lost for the season. Jacolby Brown was 13-of-23 passing for 125 yards in a 26-6 victory over Monroe last week. WR/QB Deon Fountain was 3-for-3 passing for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Two of the passes were on trick plays.
Darlington at Mount Zion (Carroll)
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Eagle Stadium, Carrollton
Records, rankings: Darlington is 4-1 overall, 2-0 in Region 6-A Div. A and No. 6 in Class A private; Mount Zion is 4-0, 1-0 and No. 5 in Class A public.
Last meeting: Darlington won 42-6 in 2013.
Three things to know: 1. Mount Zion's 20-17 victory over Darlington in 2012 was one of the biggest wins in program history. Darlington was three-time defending Region 6-A champion and 6-0 all-time against Mount Zion, which had finished 0-10 the previous two seasons. Mount Zion went on to have its first winning season (6-4) since 1996 and is 30-18 in coach Keith Holloway's five seasons. 2. Darlington junior RB Tijai Whatley has rushed for 704 yards and nine touchdowns on 93 carries. He has 1,894 career yards in just 13 games, as his sophomore season was cut short by injury. Darlington attempts only 8.6 passes per game. Another key player is RB/CB Elijah McKoy, who has 317 yards rushing and 165 receiving and has intercepted three passes. 3. Mount Zion is averaging 45.8 points per game. RB Jace Jordan has rushed for 551 yards and seven touchdowns. He also has scored on a 75-yard reception and 83-yard kickoff return. The top defender has probably been Cole Helton, who has 38 tackles and an interception.
Eagle's Landing Christian at Wesleyan
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Henderson Stadium, Norcross
Records, rankings: Eagle's Landing Christian is 5-0 overall, 2-0 in Region 5-A and No. 1 in Class A private; Wesleyan is 5-0, 2-0 and No. 2 in Class A private.
Last meeting: Eagle's Landing Christian won 35-28 in the 2010 Region 5-A championship game.
Three things to know: 1. Wesleyan has scored more than 30 points in every game. Eagle's Landing Christian has allowed 15 points total and shut out each of its past three opponents. A victory by Wesleyan would be its second over a No. 1-ranked team and first since upsetting Emanuel County Institute in the 2008 Class A title game. 2. Wesleyan gets two-thirds of its yards passing. QB Banks Ramsey is 89-of-121 for 1,266 yards and 16 touchdowns with just one interception. WR Harrison Cook has 29 receptions for 534 yards and at least one touchdown in every game. WR Zach Peterson has 21 catches for 306 yards and is prominent in the return game. Wesleyan has intercepted 10 passes, four by Jason McCleskey. 3. ELCA averages 300.6 yards rushing and 72.4 passing per game. Top rushers are Trevor Gear (54-378-5) and Josh Mays (36-361-7). Mays also is outstanding as a strong safety. Other key figures on defense are DB Khaleb Hood (offers from East Carolina and others) and DE Harrison Taylor.
First Presbyterian at Twiggs County
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, The Pit, Jeffersonville
Records, rankings: First Presbyterian is 4-0 overall, 0-0 in Region 7-A Div. A and No. 8 in Class A private; Twiggs County is 3-1, 0-0 and No. 10 in Class A public.
Last meeting: First Presbyterian won 52-38 in 2015.
Three things to know: 1. First Presbyterian is 4-0 for the first time since moving to the GHSA in 2010. The Vikings average 224.8 yards passing and 141.5 rushing. QB Dalton Cox is 69-for-100 passing for 889 yards and five TDs, and C.J. Harris has rushed for 250 yards on 37 carries. LB Tee Turley is the leading tackler for a defense that allows just 8.3 points per game. 2. Second-year Twiggs County coach Ashley Harden is turning around a program that had three consecutive 10-win seasons from 2002 to 2004 but had fallen on hard times in recent years. Harden inherited a team that won just eight games in the five seasons before his arrival and has led it to its first playoff appearance and 3-1 start since 2009. 3. Twiggs County gets about 86 percent of its offense from a running game that averages 40.8 carries and 305 yards per game. Ja'mon Height (94 carries, 655 yards, three TDs) and Javoris Smith (50-416-5) have all but 19 of the team's 163 carries. The Cobras have completed just 12 passes, for 191 yards, but two went for touchdowns.
Jefferson at Madison County
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Red Raider Stadium, Danielsville
Records, rankings: Jefferson is 4-1 overall, 0-0 in Region 8-AAAA and No. 5; Madison County is 5-0, 0-0 and unranked.
Last meeting: Madison County won 14-11 in 2001.
Three things to know: 1. Madison County, which was 1-9 a year ago, is one of the state's biggest surprises. The Red Raiders are 5-0 for the first time since 2000, when they went 10-0 against a non-region schedule. The road will get tougher, however, as they begin play this week in 8-AAAA, a six-team region filled with playoff regulars. Jefferson is the favorite to win the title, according to the computer Maxwell Ratings. 2. Madison County is primarily a running team, averaging 182.8 yards rushing and 74.0 passing. QB David Metts is the leading rusher with 400 yards and five TDs on 73 carries, and he is 41-of-71 passing for 485 yards and two TDs. Metts also is the leading tackler (37) for a defense that allows just 10.6 points per game. 3. Jefferson relies even more heavily on the run (241.4 rushing, 76.0 passing). The bulk of the Dragons' success comes from RB Colby Wood, who has 650 yards and nine TDs on 99 carries. Wood ran for 208 yards in a 31-28 win over Gainesville last week. Jefferson has attempted just 48 passes, completing 27 for 380 yards.
Norcross at Parkview
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Big Orange Jungle, Lilburn
Records, rankings: Norcross is 5-0 overall, 1-0 in Region 7-AAAAAAA and No. 5; Parkview is 3-1, 0-0 and No. 8.
Last meeting: Norcross won 21-7 in 2013.
Three things to know: 1. Norcross and Parkview are in the same region for the first time since 2003, but they've played each other seven times since then, with Norcross winning the last six. Parkview had won 12 straight from 1992 to 2004. 2. Norcross is more pass-oriented than it has been in some time. QB Baron Radcliff (Georgia Tech baseball commit) is 70-of-120 passing for 1,108 yards and 10 TDs. Norcross has only 527 yards rushing. DB Monty Montgomery has 60 solo tackles, more than twice the next player, and 15 tackles for losses. PK/P Jake Camarda averages 41.9 yards per punt and has put 10 of 19 inside the 20-yard line. 3. Parkview is similarly pass-oriented. QB Caleb Mitchell (Mercer baseball commit) is 90-of-133 passing for 907 yards and 10 touchdowns. No back has gained 100 yards rushing in a game. DB Tommy Rogers is averaging 12.3 tackles per game and has five for losses.
Rome at Carrollton
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Grisham Stadium, Carrollton
Records, rankings: Rome is 2-2 overall, 1-1 in Region 7-AAAAA and No. 6; Carrollton is 4-0, 2-0 and No. 3.
Last meeting: Carrollton won 20-8 in 1993.
Three things to know: 1. Rome and Carrollton are two of the three ranked teams in Region 7-AAAAA (No. 4 Kell is the other). Rome lost to Kell 33-30 on Sept. 9, and another loss would end the Wolves' hopes of a region title. A Carrollton victory would set up an Oct. 21 showdown with Kell that likely would decide the region championship. 2. Under first-year coach Sean Calhoun, Carrollton has been more balanced than the run-based offenses it has used in recent years. The Trojans average 150.8 yards per game rushing and 142 passing. QB Mark Wright is 39-of-66 passing for 468 yards and five touchdowns. Jaylan Thomas (41 carries, 354 yards, four TDs) and Mecose Todd (28-223-5) are the leading rushers. Carrollton has allowed just 27 points in four games. 3. Rome is primarily a running team and has two backs averaging almost 100 yards per game. Sophomore Jamious Griffin (52-399-6) and junior Jalynn Sykes (44-389-6) carry most of the load. QB Knox Kadum averages 99.3 yards passing per game and has rushed for 183 yards and two TDs.
Spalding at Mary Persons
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dan Pitts Stadium at Mitchell Field, Forsyth
Records, rankings: Spalding is 3-2 overall, 0-0 in Region 2-AAAA and No. 10; Mary Persons is 3-2, 0-0 and No. 8.
Last meeting: Spalding won 21-0 in 2009.
Three things to know: 1. This game could be the one that eventually decides the championship in 2-AAAA, as Spalding and Mary Persons are projected by the computer Maxwell Ratings as the teams that will finish first and second in the region. Spalding hasn't won a region title since 2003; Mary Persons won its 16th last season, breaking a 17-year drought. 2. Spalding's losses this season have been by a combined seven points against Griffin (AAAAA No. 5) and Houston County (AAAAAA No. 1). QB Naricuss Driver is the focus of the offense. He gets almost half of the Jaguars' rushing yardage - 122.8 yards per game of the team's 262.8 - and has passed for 415 yards. A.J. Moses has rushed for 491 yards and seven TDs on 65 carries. 3. Mary Persons also relies on the run (272.2 yards rushing, 95.6 passing). Zach Harvey is the leader with 664 yards and six TDs on 90 carries, but Jatori Sims (18 carries, 288 yards, one touchdown) and Quen Wilson (39-281-2) make significant contributions. Caleb Speir has passed for 352 yards and five TDs.
Stockbridge at Locust Grove
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Locust Grove High School, Locust Grove
Records, rankings: Stockbridge is 4-0 overall, 2-0 in Region 4-AAAAA and No. 2; Locust Grove is 4-1, 2-1 and unranked.
Last meeting: Stockbridge won 34-0 in 2013.
Three things to know: 1. Locust Grove, which opened in 2009, has reached the playoffs the past three seasons but not advanced. With a loss to region rival Jones County on Sept. 9, the Wildcats need a win here or likely will face a road trip in the first round this year. Locust Grove is 0-4 all-time against Stockbridge and 0-5 all-time against ranked teams. 2. Locust Grove averages 207.2 yards rushing and only 95.8 passing per game. RB Caleb Huntley (Western Kentucky commit) has rushed for 569 yards and at least 125 and a touchdown in every game. WR/DB Champ Leddon has 10 receptions - five for touchdowns - for 199 yards. He's also a running threat. 3. Stockbridge's offense revolves around QB Kenderick Duncan (487 yards passing, 346 rushing), RB Jalen Holston (431 rushing) and WR Marquez Ezzard (304 receiving). Duncan is committed to Georgia Southern as a cornerback. Holston and Ezzard are uncommitted three-star recruits, as are DE Kelton Dawson and DE Brenton Cox.
