The Blue Devils take a 15-0 record into tonight’s Region 2 opener against New Hampstead. The streak includes wins over Bradwell Institute, Swainsboro and Cross Creek in the final of the Monterrey Christmas Tournament at Evans.
Statesboro is led by 6-foot junior Lacy Robins, who averaged 19.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists. The point guard was the MVP of the Evans tournament and scored 47 points in the three games, 24 against Baldwin.
The Blue Devils also feature Jamiah Jones, who averages 13 points and 3.9 rebounds, and Destiny Hartwell, who averages 7.3points and 6.0 rebounds.
One of the state’s other hottest teams is also in Region 2. Wayne County (11-1) has won nine in a row since its loss to Dodge County. The Yellow Jackets won their own Christmas Tournament and return to the court on Friday at Ware County.
Here are four other hot teams going into the first weekend of the new year:
Southwest DeKalb: The Panthers (13-3) have surged into first place in Region 5 at 6-0. SWD is again a disciplined and defensively excellent team – the girls allow only 42.2 points per game. Jayla Kimbrough (12.8), Raven Thurman (10.3 points, 6.6 rebounds) and all-state candidate Lanee Edwards (12.2 points) lead the Panthers.
Columbia: The Eagles (12-3) have won eight in a row. Junior Constance Thomas is No. 3 in DeKalb County with 18.5 points per game and sophomore India Terrell averages 14 points on 50 percent shooting. Senior Shontrice Austin leads the team with 7.1 rebounds. But two of their losses have come to Arabia Mountain and Southwest DeKalb, their two biggest rivals in Region 5.
Starr's Mill: The Panthers (9-4) have won eight straight games and beat Rockdale County to win their Christmas tournament. Alice Anne Hudson, Jaclyn Hester and Ashtyn Lally. Hudson was the MVP of the Christmas Tournament and Lally was named to the all-tournament team.
Locust Grove: The Wildcats (11-4) are on a five-game winning streak and won the Mary Persons Christmas Tournament, beating Monticello in the final. All-state candidate Zamiya Passmore averages 23.7 points, 7.4 assists and 6.2 rebounds. Tolisha Walker (12.3 points, 10.5 rebounds) and Jasmine Willis (12.4 points, 3.9 rebounds) make up a formidable trio.
