Before we get into this edition of the Class A Blog, a little housekeeping is in order.
Our regular posting schedule is Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings (no later than noon). Starting next week, Tuesday's post will feature an interview/Q&A with a player or coach (send me names of those you would like to see featured: s.thomascoleman@yahoo.com) and the latest Power Ratings; Thursday will be a look at the top games on Friday night; Saturday will be a recap of what went down the night before.
The interviews/Q&A’s will start next week. Today we’ll highlight some of the results from last weekend.
ELCA makes a statement
Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy (1-0) served notice that it will be a strong contender to become the first repeat champion in Class A since Lincoln County (2005-2006), with a 39-13 thrashing of Henry County rival Eagle’s Landing, from Class AAAAA. The Chargers, ranked No. 1 in the AJC private poll, picked up Power Rating points (10 for the win, four more for beating a team four classes higher). The game was for the most part over at halftime, as the Charger defense limited Eagle’s Landing to 14 yards rushing and 54 yards passing.
Turner County uses the big play
All five of Turner County’s (1-0) touchdowns were from 29-yards are more as the Rebels picked up 13 Power Rating points with a 34-32 win over Class AAAA Dougherty. The two most explosive tallies were an 80-yard touchdown by Tamorrion Terry and a 63-yard punt return by Ontario Wilson.
PAC rolls as Aquinas struggles
The showdown between two preseason Top 10 teams turned into a blowout by halftime. Noah Campbell returned the opening kickoff of the season 85 yards for a touchdown as No. 3 (private) Prince Avenue Christian (1-0) took out Aquinas (0-1), 35-14. Aquinas, which had been ranked, No. 6 in the private poll, answered the return with a 3-yard touchdown run by Joseph Douglas on its first drive, but the Wolverines went on to score 21 unanswered to take a 28-7 lead at the half: a 6-yard run by Thomas Huff, a 24-yard touchdown pass to Christian Parrish from Grant Roland, and a 1-yard run by Roland. After Aquinas’ initial score, the Irish didn’t score again until late in the fourth quarter on s 16-yard reception by George Welch.
Is Mt. Pisgah “QB U”?
Mt. Pisgah Christian said good-bye to the best quarterback in school history two seasons ago, when Aaron Winchester headed to Georgia State. Winchester is now battling for the starting job for the Panthers. Meanwhile, his replacement at Mt. Pisgah, junior Jacob Cendoya, is putting up stats that are just as impressive. Cendoya had an impressive sophomore season and his season debut last week was spectacular: 488 yards of total offense and five touchdowns in a 43-36 win over Class AA Holy Innocents’. Cendoya threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for another 205 yards and two touchdowns.
Manchester, Wesleyan impressive
Two teams dropping down into Class A after reclassification made statements over the weekend. No. 10 Manchester, which went 8-4 last season in Class AA, drilled Greenville (0-1), 49-0. On the private side, No. 2 Wesleyan (1-0), which went 9-3 last season in Class AA, slammed Class AAA Therrell, 41-6.
