Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy’s

early season struggles are certainly worth discussion and will be covered in this space in the coming weeks.

But for now here are a handful of teams that are off to starts that are uncharacteristically good:

Atkinson County (2-0).

The Rebels from Pearson, an hour northeast of Valdosta, have bounced back and forth between Class A and AA for the past five years, without much success.  Their record over that span:  6-44, including 1-19 the past two seasons.  But this season head coach Kipp Hall, his second ever as a head coach, has a veteran roster. After an bye this week, AtCo will look to stay unbeaten as winless Baconton Charter (0-2) comes calling.

Jenkins County (2-0).

The road will get rugged for the War Eagles in Region 3, Division A, where dates with No. 3 Calvary Day and No. 10 Savannah Christian loom on the horizon.  But for now, Jenkins County has eyes on returning to the post season for the first time since 1982.

Randolph-Clay (2-0).

The Red Devils have been respectable under head coach David McFather, now in his sixth season, but haven’t been able to make it to the state playoffs.  This season, the school that is known more for basketball, will turn to a basketball standout to lead the way to the Red Devils’ first post season appearance since 2005, the last time Randolph-Clay won a region title.  Gary McCrae, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound athlete who lines up at linebacker, running back and receiver on the football field when he’s not dominating inside the paint at power forward, will look to guide R-C to the promised land, along with 6-2, 255-pound running back Rahemn Price. The Red Devils could pick up some valuable Power Rating points Friday when the visit Class AAAA Dougherty in Augusta.

Strong Rock Christian (2-0).

After spending eight seasons at Fayette County, Tommy Webb, in his first season as head coach at Strong Rock, has the Patriots 2-0 for the just the second time in the school’s eight-year history.
