State tennis tournament set; three schools try for sweep

Marist, Westminster and Pace Academy go for a sweep of boys and girls championships on Saturday at the state tennis tournament at the Clayton County International Park Tennis Center in Jonesboro.
The tournament begins at 8:45 a.m. with competition in the Class A Public and Private classifications and continues non-stop until a champion is crowned in each of the seven divisions.

In Class AAAA , the Marist boys will play Carrollton, while the Marist girls will meet North Oconee. The Marist boys are going for their third straight title. The Marist girls, who were champions in 2013-14, are trying to reclaim the title after missing last year.

In Class AAA , the Westminster boys will play Oconee County for the championship and the girls will meet Savannah Arts in the final. The Westminster boys have won the title for the last five years and for 15 of the last 16 years. The Westminster girls won back-to-back in 2013-14.

In Class AA , the Pace Academy boys meet Lovett and the Pace girls will play defending champion Wesleyan. The Pace boys haven't won state since 2002 and the girls won most recently in 2001.

In Class AAAAAA , Etowah will try to pry the title away for the Walton girls. The Eagles defeated Walton twice during the regular season, including the region tournament. Walton has won the last three crowns and since 2001 has failed only twice to win the state championship.

In the boys championship, region rivals Northview and Johns Creek will meet in the final. Johns Creek beat Northview for the Region 6 championship. Northview won the Class AAAAA title in 2014 and Johns Creek won it in 2012.

In Class AAAAA , Kell and Columbus will be trying to win their first state girls tennis championship. On the boys side, Lakeside-Evans will defend its championship against Starr's Mill, which won its last title in 2013.

In Class A Private
, the Brookstone and Stratford Academy girls will play for the championship. Stratford was a power in GISA tennis and Brookstone has won 10 titles, but none since 2009. In the boys final, Paideia and Athens Academy will meet for the championship. Paideia seeks its first title, while Athens is after its first since 2009,

In Class A Public, ,the  Irwin County girls will try to make it three straight titles when it meets Taylor County. In the boys final, Telfair County will meet Irwin County to determine which school wins its first state tennis title.
