Peyton Glover of Grayson pitched a no-hitter on Monday as Grayson rolled over Region 8-AAAAAA rival Central Gwinnett on Monday. Glover, a senior, recorded 11 strikeouts en route to her no-no. She also starred at the plate with two hits and a pair of RBIs. Amanda Kemp and Carley Batchelor supported Glover’s cause, as well. Kemp had two hits and an RBI while Batchelor scored twice and drove in two runs.
Parkview also benefited from a stellar pitching performance on Monday. MacKenzie Michels tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the Panthers past Providence Christian Academy 6-0. Michels improved to 3-0 after giving up six hits and fanning six batters.
Coaches of four 2013 softball state championship teams got together and scheduled a round robin-format tournament dubbed the “Tournament of Champions,” which was held last weekend at Northwest Whitfield High School in Tunnel Hill, Ga. It featured host Northwest Whitfield, Gordon Lee, Calhoun and Buford.
Buford, which triumphed in Class AAA last year and is now playing in Class AAAA, compiled a 2-1 record. The Wolves trounced Calhoun 2-1 last Friday night, took care of Northwest Whitfield 7-3 in its Saturday opener, then fell to Gordon Lee 5-0 in its event finale later in the day.
Senior Jordan Deep 7-for-10 with seven RBIs over the course of the three games for Buford. Classmate Sydney Stavro scored three runs against Calhoun and also swiped two bases before scoring twice and adding another theft against Northwest Whitfield. Fellow senior Tessa Daniels knocked a two-run homer against the host Bruins. The Wolves’ loaded senior class also dominated on the mound, as Bria Bush befuddled Calhoun with a complete-game shutout. She improved to 3-0 for the season after allowing five hits and no walks while striking out seven hitters.
Gordon Lee, the four-time defending champion in Class A, earned its win over Buford by jumping all over the Wolves early in the game. The Trojans crossed the plate four times in the second inning, in part thanks to a bases-clearing triple by freshman Gracey Kruse. Junior Emily Armour picked up the victory on the mound after surrendering a mere two hits and striking out 13 Buford batters. Gordon Lee was denied a chance to maintain its momentum later on Saturday when rain postponed its showdown against Calhoun. The contest will be made up on Oct. 2. Gordon Lee did, however, return to the field on Monday. Armour hit a three-run home run to pace the Trojans past Cass 8-0. She also pitched five innings and allowed just one hit.
