Here’s what happened over the weekend in Week 10:
Greene County rides upset into Top 10Greene County's 36-28 win over Aquinas was significant in a number of ways. First and foremost, it gave the Tigers the Region 7-Division B championship and set them up for their first region title since 2005, when they finished 13-1 and advanced to the Class AA semi-finals. Next, Greene County (6-2, 5-0) snapped a two-game losing streak to Aquinas (7-1, 4-1), which defeated them last season, 42-0. And finally, the win vaulted the Tigers into the AJC Top 10 for the first time since 2016, when they reached the No. 9 spot and reached the Class A public quarterfinals. Greene County is No. 10 in this week's AJC Public Top 10 while Aquinas dropped from No. 5 to No. 10 in the Private Top 10.
Dooly County's busy week ends in loss
Due to damage caused by Hurricane Michael, Dooly County was forced to play two games in four days. Game 1 was last Monday, a 44-19 win over Crawford County. But Game 2 didn't go so well as Dooly County (4-4, 3-2 in Region 4-Division B) was thumped 50-19 in its regularly scheduled game at Taylor County (4-4, 3-2) on Friday. The loss dropped the Bobcats from the AJC Public Top 10 poll and will hurt them in the Public Power Ratings, where they currently hold the No. 15 spot.
Savannah Christian takes another step toward sub-region title
Savanna Christian moved up one spot to No. 6 in the AJC Private Top 10 with a 23-7 win over crosstown rival Savannah Country Day. The Raiders jumped out to a 13-0 lead and then got a fumble recovery return by junior Nate Moon last in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Moon had a 13-yard rushing touchdown as well. Even though the win moved Savannah Christian (7-1, 4-0 in Region 3-Division A) closer to the sub-region title game in two weeks, the Raiders must still defeat Claxton (6-2, 3-1) next week. If not, the possibility of a three-way tie in Division A involving the Raiders, Calvary Day and Claxton exists. The other side of the sub-region is a lot less complicated. Emanuel County Institute (4-0, 5-3) will host Montgomery County (4-0, 6-2) for the sub-region Division B title next week.
