The new rankings were released yesterday, and the top teams are Lambert's boys and Milton's girls in 6A-7A and Westminster's boys and Westminster's girls in A-5A. According to the LaxPower.com RPI rankings, Lovett's boys and North Gwinnett's girls are the top overall teams.
Teams are hitting the road for spring break, which means high profile, out-of-state event competition. Here are some programs to keep an eye on:
Centennial Knights (9-1)
Upcoming matches: at St. Andrew's-Florida (13-3) on Friday; at Oxbridge Academy-Florida (12-4) on Saturday.
Notes: The Knights, who are ranked No. 3 in 6A-7A, are in Palm Beach to play two high-quality opponents. Coach Bryan Wallace talked about the the two teams in an AJC interview on Tuesday. The Knights head to the Sunshine State on a six-game win streak after handling No. 5 Lassiter 14-6 on Tuesday, a team they lost to in the quarterfinals last season. Their only loss is to No. 1 Lambert on Feb. 28. The Knights will stay in Florida for spring break vacation, then return to action on April 14 against Martin Luther King (1-8).
Westminster Wildcats (11-1)
Upcoming matches: Lambert (10-1) on Saturday, Lovett (9-1) on April 7.
Notes: A battle for state supremacy takes place on Saturday as A-5A's top-ranked Westminster hosts 6A-7A's top-ranked Lambert. The Longhorns head in as the favorites and are undefeated against Peach State teams, with their lone loss coming 12-6 to Maryland's Calvert Hall on March 11. They've outscored all other opponents 175-38, which has them as the No. 3-ranked team regionally in the USLacrosse Magazine poll. The Wildcats are on a nine-game win streak of their own, including wins over 6A-7A's No. 5 Lassiter and A-5A's No. 5 GAC. Last season, Lambert hosted and edged the Wildcats 7-6.
Milton Lady Eagles (5-3)
Upcoming matches: Holy Cross-Maryland (3-2) and Robinson Secondary-Virginia (3-0) on Saturday.
Notes: The Eagles will compete at the 26th annual St. Stephen's & St. Agnes (Virginia) Spring Fling on Saturday, an invite-only competition that features some of the country's best girls lacrosse programs. Given the Lady Eagles' domination of GHSA lacrosse (10 state titles since 2005), they're definitely qualified to be in this event, where on Saturday they'll play Holy Cross-Maryland at 9:30 a.m. and Robinson Secondary-Virginia at 1:30 p.m. Holy Cross is No. 15 in the DC-area RPI rankings, while Robinson Secondary is No. 4 in its region. The Lady Eagles won't play again until April 12, when they take on Pennsylvania's Conestoga.
