Commerce is No. 1 for the first time since 2000, and Greater Atlanta Christian is No. 1, moving up one spot in Class AAA despite losing, after an unusual week of high school football.

Commerce (3-0) takes over the top spot in the Class A public division after No. 1 Macon County (2-1) lost to AA’s No. 1 team, Fitzgerald, 70-42.

Commerce has reached the state semifinals each of the past two seasons, losing in 2015 to eventual champion Clinch County, but has not been No. 1 in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution rankings since its 2000 state-championship season.

In AAA, Greater Atlanta Christian moved up to No. 1 despite a 21-17 road loss to Valor Christian, Colorado’s defending Class 5A champion. GAC quarterback Davis Mills, an AJC preseason Super 11 pick, returned to play his first game of the season. Mills, who is committed to Stanford, was thought lost to the season after a preseason knee injury.

Previous No. 1 Pace Academy fell to No. 2 after a 38-10 loss to No. 2 Thomson of AAAA. Only three undefeated AAA teams are ranked, none higher than No. 5 Liberty County (3-0).
