Class A private schools were on their game in high school football last week. And it came largely at the expense of their public-school rivals.

Athens Christian, unranked among the Class A private schools, defeated Class A public No. 1 Commerce 20-14 in a Region 8-A game.

Commerce (3-1) fell to No. 9 in the rankings. The new No. 1 is Macon County (3-1), which has lost only to Class AA No. 1 Fitzgerald.

Athens Christian (2-2) had been 0-18 against ranked teams since joining the Georgia High School Association in 2000.

Two other Class A games matched ranked private teams against a ranked public teams. The private school won both decisively. No. 7 Stratford Academy beat No. 6 Lincoln County 36-19. No. 6 Darlington beat No. 7 Bowdon 28-7.

There weren’t many upsets overall in week six of the regular season. Three other top-five teams lost, but all to larger schools. Valdosta lost to Colquitt County 45-24; Thomas County Central lost to Lee County 37-7; and Blessed Trinity lost to McCallie of Tennessee 56-6.
