No point shortage at Pierce County ... Waco finally wins one
Anybody want to start a pool on how many points Pierce County will score this season?
So far the Bears are on their way to challenging a record pace. They’re averaging 46.25 points in their first four starts. There have been 31 teams who have averaged 45 points, according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association. Twenty teams have scored at least 500 points.
The Pierce County total includes 41 against a Cook team that was state ranked at the time and 64 in the bizarre triple-overtime game against Jenkins.
Stetson Bennett leads the Pierce County attack. He has thrown for 1,056 yards and nine touchdowns and rushed for 211 yards. LaFallen Taylor is the top rusher with 290 yards and two touchdowns. Chase Royer has 26 receptions and Blake Chancey has caught 15 passes.
The Bears travel to play a good Brantley County team this week.
Three ready to make their case in 8-AAA
It is generally agreed that Elbert County, Jefferson and Hart County are the three best teams in Region 8-AAA. That leaves one playoff spot to be split up among the other five teams, just like it did a year ago.
The picture could be cleared up over the next couple of weeks when Oconee County,(4-1), East Jackson (2-3) and Morgan County (2-2) take turns playing each other.
The fun starts this week when Morgan County plays at East Jackson. Morgan will be playing its first region game, while East Jackson is trying to rebound from last week’s 49-0 thumping against Oconee County.
Oconee, which got the fourth spot in 2014, has a leg up based on the win over East Jackson. The Warriors travel to Morgan County (the middle of three straight road games) in a contest that could be the tie breaker. Morgan and Oconee have one shared opponent; they both lost close games to Putnam County.
Washington County finally breaks through
One win does not a season make, but there were some happy people in Sandersville last week when Washington County found itself on the right side of the ledger for the first time all year.
The win came over downtrodden Glenn Hills, but that didn’t seem to matter when you’ve lost your first four games.
The Golden Hawks, who have played for the state championship the last two seasons, have an important game this week in Augusta against Laney.
