Notebook: State gymnastics meet Friday ... Lambert LAX stays hot

April 23, 2015

The 2015 GHSA Gymnastics state meet will be held Friday night at Westminster with six teams vying for the title and nine qualifiers taking part in individual events.

Noticeably absent will be the defending All-Around state champion Katie Stuart of Lambert. Stuart missed last week’s state prelims due to a scheduling conflict with the Junior Olympics regional meet in Tampa, Fla.

Lambert was still able to finish second in the prelims and will be vying to knock off defending state champ Buford. Also qualifying for the state meet were the teams from Colquitt County, Carrollton, Roswell and Forsyth Central. Carrollton finished second last year, while Lambert took third.

Qualifiers for individual events include: Brittany Kean-Murphy (Northview), Cara Trench (Northview), Katherine Buckner (Walton), Sydney Barrett (Cartersville), Tierra Acoff (Camden County), Bobimarie Henderson (Lassiter), Dani Antunez (Cambridge), Khloe Parker (Tift County) and Kelly Aycock (Locust Grove).

Competition is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

The newly christened No. 1 Lambert boys  may be the hottest team in the state, following up last week's 11-6 win over highly touted McCallie School (Tenn.) with a 12-11 overtime win Wednesday over Lovett, the second-ranked team in Class A-AAAAA. Still ahead, a pivotal Area 3-AAAAAA game with third-ranked Johns Creek on Saturday.

The Marist boys (No. 10 Class A-AAAAA) bounced back from a disappointing week to prove how dangerous they can be in a 5-4 win over fourth-ranked Cambridge on Tuesday. The War Eagles (9-4) lost to Lovett and were then upset by Decatur last week, marking the second time they've suffered back-to-back losses this season. Otherwise, they've been stellar, owning wins over No. 5 St. Pius and No. 6 McIntosh.

---

The Lassiter girls (No. 4 Class AAAAAA) scored perhaps their biggest win of the season Wednesday, knocking off No. 2 Walton, 16-10. The Trojans, who haven't lost to a Georgia team this season, have a trio of games against teams from Tennessee this weekend before taking on top-ranked Milton on April 28.
