Lambert and Whitewater have been selected to play in the USA Baseball National High School Invitational, the top prep baseball tournament in the country, March 25-28 in Cary, N.C.
Lambert won Georgia’s Class AAAAAA title last season and was ranked No. 1 nationally by USA Today and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Lambert returns AJC player of the year Seth Beer, a Clemson commit who hit .589 last season. Also back are sophomores Tuker Maxwell and Kyle McCann, who hit over .400, and pitcher J.D. Dutka (11-1).
Whitewater, the AAAAA runner-up in 2014, has several college signees that include pitchers Jake Lee (Georgia Tech) and Ethan Gillis (Kennesaw State) and outfielder/pitcher Jabari Richards (Furman).
‘’This is a prestigious event to play in,’’ Whitewater coach Russell Bennett said. “Our kids will get top-notch exposure and it allows for our program as a whole to be recognized on a national level.’’
Barnhill makes U.S. junior national softball team
Pope fastpitch pitcher Kelly Barnhill was named this week to the U.S. Junior National Team that will play in the World Cup X in California and the International Softball Federation Junior World Championships in Oklahoma this summer. The 17-member team of 19-and-under players was selected after a two-day tryout. Barnhill led Pope to the 2014 Class AAAAAA title. She pitched 22 career no-hitters and struck out a state-record 534 batters this past season with a fastball clocked at more than 70 mph. Barnhill has signed with Florida.
Official wins NFHS regional award
Al Dattolo has earned the 2014 NFHS Distinguished Officials Award for Section Three, which includes eight Southern states. Dattolo has officiated GHSA basketball and softball for more than 30 years and serves as the GHSA officials liaison for softball.
