GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the most surprising and notable games of the weekend:
1. Tift County 37, Camden County 34: Less than a month ago, Camden County was undefeated and ranked No. 2. But after three consecutive region losses, the Wildcats are in last place in 1-AAAAAA. Camden must win its two remaining games - against No. 6 Lee County and No. 1 Colquitt County - or will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1988.
2. Lee County 42, Lowndes 30: Lee County, coming off a 58-14 blowout loss to No. 1 Colquitt County the week before, moved into a tie for second place in 1-AAAAAA with its first victories in five tries against Lowndes. Lee County won the region title in 1-AAAAA in 2013 but was projected by some to finish in last place this year after the jump in classification.
3. Carrollton 21, Whitewater 20: Carrollton's up-and-down year has earned it a spot in this column several times this season, notably last week after being upset by Fayette County. But the Trojans rebounded to beat a team that came in 4-2 and was projected as a 14-point favorite by the computer Maxwell Ratings. Carrollton is 3-4 overall and 1-1 in 5-AAAA.
4. M.L. King 28, Miller Grove 24: M.L. King picked up its first victory of the season and snapped a school-record seven-game losing streak by beating the Wolverines for the third straight year. Despite its 1-6 overall record, M.L. King still has a shot at making the 6-AAAAA play-in games, but the Lions must beat No. 9 Stephenson this week to stay in the contention.
5. Cairo 36, Thomas County Central 13: Cairo picked up a surprisingly lopsided victory in a game in which it was considered a one-point underdog by Maxwell. Cairo moved into first place in 1-AAAA Div. A and can win the subregion title by beating Monroe this week. The loss likely ended Thomas Central's hopes of winning its first region title since 2009.
6. Schley County 26, Dooly County 21: Dooly County has lost back-to-back region games for the first time since early in the 2011 season. The win was Schley County's first against the Bobcats in five all-time meetings. Schley County, which was No. 21 in last week's Class A public-school power rankings, has quietly moved into fifth place in tough Region 4-A.
7. Coosa 7, Model 0: Coosa has been under the radar for much of the season, but this was the Eagles' fifth consecutive victory and pulled them into a tie with eighth-ranked Darlington for first place in 7-AA. Coosa and Darlington will meet on Oct. 31 with the region title likely at stake. Model, which was ranked three weeks ago, fell into fourth place in the region.
8. North Cobb Christian 48, New Hampstead 7: North Cobb Christian, an eighth-year program in Acworth, improved to 3-4 and tied the school record for most victories in a season. The Eagles, who beat Glascock County the previous week, have won two consecutive games for the first time in school history. New Hampstead is a first-year Savannah program.
9. Banks County 49, Lumpkin County 46: The Region 7-AAA standings got a bit of a jolt when the last-place team knocked off the first-place team. Lumpkin County (4-4), which Maxwell projected as a 16-point favorite, fell into second place but will still win the region title if it beats Dawson County and West Hall in its last two games. Banks County is 4-3.
10. Lakeview Academy 29, Athens Academy 28: Athens Academy, which entered the game at No. 28 in the Class A private-school rankings, is likely to miss the playoffs for the second consecutive year. But this marked the low point of the season, losing to a Lakeview team that hadn't beaten the Spartans in four previous tries and has never made the playoffs.
