GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the most surprising and notable games of the weekend:
1. Carver (Atlanta) 32, Creekside 29: Carver, the somewhat forgotten team in a region that includes No. 8 Creekside, No. 9 Stephenson and previously ranked Mays, moved into the rankings at No. 7 by knocking off the defending state champion. Carver (6-1, 2-0), the only unbeaten team in 6-AAAAA Division B, is seeking its first region title since 2007. ''That ranks up there at the top, the biggest win for Carver since I've been there for sure,'' said Carver coach Darren Myles, in his 10th season at the Atlanta city school.
2. Fayette County 33, Carrollton 7: Carrollton opened 5-AAAA play with its fourth loss of the year, the most for the Trojans in the regular season since they went 5-5 in 2001 and then lost in the first round of the playoffs. The victory was the first for Fayette County (3-3, 1-0) in eight all-time meetings with the Trojans and reversed a 52-14 loss from last year.
3. St. Pius 10, Marist 9: St. Pius (4-2, 4-0) is in sole possession of first place in Region 6-AAAA after its third consecutive victory against Marist, which was ranked No. 4 last week. From 1976 through the 2007 season, Marist was 29-2-1 against its Atlanta Catholic school rival. Marist leads the all-time series 30-16-3. The teams had not played each other since 2009.
4. North Springs 24, Riverwood 17: North Springs ended a 13-game losing streak that began after a 35-34 victory over Hapeville in the second game last season. It was the Spartans' first victory in a game that counted in subregion or region standings since a win over Lithonia in 2008 (not including a 2009 loss that was overturned by a Stone Mountain forfeit).
5. Berrien 35, Early County 26: Berrien (3-3, 1-1) picked up its first region victory in what likely was battle for the fourth playoff spot from 1-AA behind the projected top three of Brooks County, Thomasville and Fitzgerald. Berrien likely needs two victories in its final four games to reach the playoffs for the first time since 1993. Early County is 1-2 in the region.
6. Wesleyan 17, B.E.S.T Academy 0: Wesleyan's playoff hopes appeared to take a hit with a 12-9 loss to Hapeville on Oct. 3, but the Wolves (5-2, 3-1) got back into the thick of the race by beating a B.E.S.T. Academy team that was ranked for four weeks earlier this season. B.E.S.T. (3-4, 1-3) has fallen into a tie for fifth place in 6-AA after losing three of four.
7. Druid Hills 20, M.L. King 19: Druid Hills beat M.L. King for the first time in five meetings and is 4-2 for the first time since 1993. Druid Hills (4-2, 2-0) is tied for first place in 6-AAAAA Division A with its next two opponents - Stephenson and Southwest DeKalb. M.L. King (0-6, 0-2) has six losses for the first time since its inaugural 2002 team went 3-7.
8. Statesboro 14, Richmond Hill 13: Statesboro picked up its first victory of the season and dealt a blow to Richmond Hill's hopes of reaching the playoffs for the third consecutive year. Statesboro (1-5, 1-3) snapped a six-game losing streak dating to last season that was tied for the longest in school history. Richmond Hill (2-4, 1-4) is in eighth place in 3-AAAAA.
9. Central Gwinnett 32, Brookwood 0: Central Gwinnett was projected as an eight-point favorite by the computer Maxwell Ratings, but the victory was significant because it snapped the Black Knights' 15-game losing streak to Brookwood. Central Gwinnett (4-2, 3-1) is tied for third place in 8-AAAAAA and plays No. 2-ranked Grayson this week.
10. Walton 35, Woodstock 28: Walton was forced to forfeit three victories and lost to previously winless Pope in the previous week, but the Raiders rebounded with a win that knocked Woodstock (5-2, 3-2) out of a tie for first place in 5-AAAAAA. Walton (2-3, 2-5) is in sixth place in the region but could still make the playoffs if it wins its final three games.
