GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the most surprising and notable games of the weekend:
1. White County 24, North Hall 23: North Hall earned its first ranking last week since 2013, but its stay in the top 10 was a short one after losing in overtime to White County, which picked up its first victory. White County, which stopped a two-point conversion attempt in OT to seal the win, was projected as a 21-point underdog by the computer Maxwell Ratings.
2. Sequoyah 29, Creekview 26: Sequoyah snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series with its Cherokee County rival and picked up its first victory of the season. Sequoyah beat Creekview in the series debut, 35-34 in 2008, and had not beaten the Grizzlies since. Both victories came in double overtime. Creekview (2-1 coming in) was a 17-point favorite.
3. Bradwell Institute 30, Tattnall County 20: Bradwell Institute ended a 22-game losing streak that was the longest in school history and the second-longest active streak among current Class AAAAAA schools. The Tigers had not won a game since beating Groves 38-13 in 2013. Tattnall County, a AAA team that was 2-1 coming in, was a 10-point favorite.
4. Chamblee 6, Salem 0: Chamblee was the biggest Maxwell underdog (25 points) that won in Week 5. The Bulldogs picked up their first victory of the season, ending a nine-game losing streak, and handed Salem its first loss of 2016. Salem had not been shut out since a 20-0 loss to Rockdale County in the first game of the 2013 season.
5. Lakeside (Atlanta) 22, Miller Grove 15: Lakeside is 3-1 for the first time since 2005 after beating Miller Grove for just the third time in nine all-time meetings. Miller Grove was projected as a nine-point favorite. A victory this week against winless Meadowcreek would put the Vikings at 4-1 for just the second time since the 1996 team reached the state final.
Also of note: Columbus beat Shaw 46-26 to end a 19-game losing streak against its city rival. It was the Blue Devils' first victory in the series since Nov. 4, 1994, and the 46 points were the most they have ever scored against the Raiders. ... Class A Dooly County, a 20-point underdog, picked up its first win of the year, knocking off Dodge County 34-25 in the first meeting between the schools. Dodge County was ranked No. 10 in Class AA last week. ... Mountain View improved to 4-0 for the first time since it began playing a full varsity schedule in 2010 by beating Shiloh 40-7. The Bears, who won all four of their games in 2009, will set a school record for wins with their next victory. ... Pike County, which was 3-17 the past two years, improved to 3-1 this season with an 11-8 victory over Fayette County, a 21-point favorite. Fayette County, two classifications higher than Pike County, was 2-0-1 in its first three games. ... Terrell County, a 17-point underdog, beat Seminole County 20-14 and handed the Indians their first loss of the season. Terrell and Seminole are two of six teams that are undefeated or 2-1 in Region 1-A play.
