It’s a relatively light schedule in Class AAAAAA this week, with 17 of the 58 teams having the weekend off.
Call it the calm before the storm, which is expected to strike next Friday with the opening of region play in powerhouse 1-AAAAAA. No. 1-ranked Houston County will face No. 3 Lee County, and No. 2 Northside-Warner Robins will travel to No. 4.
But that’s later. This week, there are still a number of good games, including a big one for first place in Region 5 and the beginning of region play in Regions 3 and 8.
Here are some of the top games on the Class AAAAAA schedule in Week 7 (all games listed are Friday):
*Alexander at Northgate: Fifth-ranked Northgate and No. 10 Alexander are the only unbeaten teams remaining in 5-AAAAAA, and the winner will emerge as the favorite to win the region title. However, both teams will face Mays, which is 3-1 overall but 2-0 in the region, in the final two weeks of the season. *Macon County at Northside-Warner Robins: Three of the five teams in Region 1 will take the week off, but Northside (and Coffee) will get in one final tune-up before region play begins. Macon County is the No. 1-ranked team in Class A public, and the computer Maxwell Ratings project Northside as a 29-point favorite. The Eagles have given up just 31 points in their five games.
*Mundy's Mill at Tucker (Adams Stadium): It's looking more and more like the fourth playoff berth in Region 4 behind Lovejoy, Tucker and Stephenson will go to the winner of the Mundy's Mill-Drew game on Oct. 27. Mundy's Mill already has lost to Lovejoy and Stephenson (21-7 last week) and has one more shot against the region's top dogs before settling into an easier part of the schedule.
*Centennial at Chattahoochee: Cambridge, Centennial and Chattahoochee are tied for second place in 7-AAAAAA with 2-1 region records. Johns Creek is only undefeated team in region play and faces Cambridge this week. That means the winner of the Centennial-Chattahoochee game will head into next week either alone in second place or tied for first with Johns Creek and Cambridge.
*Alcovy at Grovetown: Region 3 appears to be the most wide open in Class AAAAAA, with no team grabbing the label of favorite in the first half of the season. This game, which kicks off region play while most of the rest of the region is off, will give somebody a chance to get an early leg up in the playoff race. Grovetown (2-3) has never been to the playoffs in its eight-year history.
