Sid Maxwell, the football coach who started Lambert’s football program five years ago, is resigning.
Maxwell told his players of his decision Tuesday morning, according to Lambert athletics director Drew Ferrer.
‘’He’s at a point where he’s ready to step back and become a parent,’’ Ferrer said. “He’s got a son who plays baseball at South Carolina, and he’s gone to watch Brock play every weekend. After 26 or 27 years of doing this, he wants to do that without having to worry about things. He’s done a phenomenal job here.’’
Maxwell wasn’t immediately available for comment.
Maxwell was 31-16 at Lambert and never had a losing season. Lambert made the playoffs in three of four full varsity seasons. The team finished 6-5 in 2013. Brock Maxwell is a former quarterback at Lambert. Maxwell has a younger son, sophomore Tucker, who plays football and baseball.
A Virginia native, Maxwell was part of the staff that began Sequoyah’s program in 1990 and became head coach at that Cherokee County school in 1994. Maxwell led Sequoyah to eight playoff appearances and two 10-win seasons. His overall record in Georgia is 128-83.
