The Lambert boys will defend their championship at the 12th annual High School Invitational at the Atlanta Athletic Club, perhaps the most sought-after invitation in the state.
The 28-team field will enjoy the opportunity to compete on the club’s historic Highland Course, site of the U.S. Open, three PGA Championships and most recently the 2014 U.S. Amateur.
Lambert beat Gainesville by four shots a year and returns the nucleus of the team that won the Class AAAAAA championship in 2015, including Athletic Club member Brett Barron. Lambert is coming off a victory in the 22-team Best Ball Challenge at Bears Best. The Longhorns shot a 20-under 196, with Brett Barron and Kevin Stine both shooting 64s as the team won its third tournament of the season.
The field includes xx other state championship teams: Class AAAAA Cambridge, Class AAAA Marist, Class AAA Blessed Trinity and Class AA Lovett. Cambridge and Mill Creek, which was third in Class AAAAAA last year, are new to the field.
Other participants who played among the top four at state last year include Westminster, Brookstone (who won the High School Invitational two years ago), Gainesville and Greater Atlanta Christian.
Other teams in the field are Mount Vernon, North Atlanta, Dalton, Wesleyan, Alpharetta, Harrison and Wilson Hall of South Carolina.
Lambert trio leads AAC’s Girls Invitational
The AAC will also host the Girls Invitational, an event for individuals that will be played concurrently on the club’s Riverside Course, site of the U.S. Women’s Open.
The field is led by two girls from Lambert: Lauren Lightfritz, a Mercer commitment who finished third at state last spring, and Kayley Marschke, an Auburn commitment. Their teammate, Christine McDonnell, is also in the field.
Other top players in the field include: Skylar Thompson of Buford, who has qualified for the Drive, Chip and Putt finals at Augusta National; Lizzie Feedy of Pope; Tiffany Kang of South Forsyth, and Madison Barnett of Whitefield Academy, a Wofford commitment.
