The Lambert girls remain the team to beat in the Region 6-AAAAAA girls soccer race despite a 1-0 loss to Northview on Tuesday that broke the Longhorns’ 11-game winning streak.
The loss dropped Lambert (11-2, 6-1) into a three-way tie for first place with Johns Creek and South Forsyth, but the Longhorns beat both teams in March.
“This team boasts a very deep roster of talented players, and we have had to lean on that depth in order to reach this unprecedented level of success in our program,” Lambert coach Scott Luthart said. “Working around significant injuries as well as club soccer conflicts has left us depleted on several occasions, but players have stepped up and filled in admirably to allow us to continue our torrid start.”
Senior Emily Haugen leads the Longhorns with eight goals and 16 assists, but Luthart also credited the offensive contributions of Maggie Hanusek, Keely Cartrett, Olivia Haugan and Briarly Beauchamp. Kat Matthews, M.E. Craven, Evan Boland, Brooke Endres and goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert form the core of a defensive unit that has allowed just 10 goals this season.
Lambert resumes region play against Habersham Central on April 14, but Luthart will be taking a group of players to England over spring break for training as well as two games against local club and high school teams.
“Our hope is that we can come back at the top of our game and put together an extended playoff run,” Luthart said.
