Lacrosse notebook: Centennial senior climbs to No. 5 nationally in all-time scoring

Centennial’s Nate Solomon scored 10 goals and added seven assists to lead the second-ranked Knights to a pair of lopsided wins in last weekend’s Georgia-Florida Showdown in Orlando, Fla. In process, he became the No. 5 scorer in high school lacrosse history, passing Casey Powell in the process. Powell, the former captain of the US national team, was a four-time All-American at Syracuse, the same school where Solomon has pledged to play in college.

Solomon now sits at 558 career points and has six more regular season games on the docket, making the 600-point plateau a real possibility. Only two high school players have ever reached that number. Solomon’s next chance to add to his total comes next week when Centennial (11-1) hosts McCallie (Tenn.).

For most of the state, it’s a light week for lacrosse as teams take time off during Spring Break.

One notable exception: Friday’s Lovett at Westminster matchup. The Lions (9-3) and Wildcats (12-1) are ranked Nos. 2 and 1 in Class A-AAAAA, respectively, and are considered to be among the state’s top boys teams, regardless of classification.

Westminster, which is ranked No. 7 in the South by LaxMagazine.com, absorbed its only loss of the season, 11-9, to Boys Latin (Md.), the seventh-ranked team in the country. Within Georgia, the Wildcats own notable wins over top-10 Class AAAAAA teams, Roswell and Harrison.

Lovett has lost a competitive game against Boys Latin, as well as one to Lake Highland Prep (Fla.) and a 15-14 heartbreaker against Centennial. But the Lions are also own a win over Johns Creek, the top-ranked team in Class AAAAAA.

The Creekview girls are also staying busy this week with four games scheduled, including a pair of wins taken on Tuesday over Woodstock and Sequoyah.

The Lady Grizzlies (9-1) haven’t lost since dropping the season-opener to No. 4 Kell – in fact, they haven’t been threatened, winning by an average margin of 18.3-4. The competition is about to get stiffer, though. After Wednesday’s game with Cherokee, Creekview will face No. 7 River Ridge on Friday then No. 2 Westminster next Tuesday.
