Irwin County has hired Coffee assistant coach Buddy Nobles as head football coach to replace Jon Lindsey, the Tifton Gazette is reporting.

Nobles followed Coffee head coach Robby Pruitt from Fitzgerald in 2012 and had been on Pruitt's staff  at University Christian and Union County in Florida, where the two were part of several state championship teams.

Nobles was head coach for five seasons at Union County, leading the team to a Class 2B state championship game in 2003 with future Clemson and NFL running back C.J. Spiller. Nobles later  rejoined Pruitt at Fitzgerald, where Nobles' son, Kaleb, became an outstanding quarterback.

Irwin County was 10-2-1 last season and reached the Class A public-school semifinals. Lindsey took the head coaching job at Cook.
